As an NYPD detective, she has her eyes set on rising up in her career. She knows she can do it, and she knows she’s good at it. Being a good detective comes easy to her… but it seems catching the infamous serial killer, The Silencer gives her pause. As the infamous killer continues to evade the police, Emma’s boss calls in help from the small-town police force, now known for stopping a bad cop named Andrew. Now, Emma is feeling a little crowded with the new cops crowding her space. However, she knows better than anyone with this killer, they need all the help that they can get. But, as clues and secrets start piling up, the serial killer seems to be the farthest thing from what they expected. It seems that suddenly, The Silencer is out for blood, and the police are running out of time before he strikes again. Tables of Content Chapter One Emma Pepper never got the opportunity to wear high heels. She knew that people would wonder why she wore a nice evening dress with flats. They wanted to know why she went to the events in casual footwear, and she always told them it was because her feet were sensitive. Of course, that wasn’t a lie. Her feet were sensitive. She wore them because she knew it would be impractical in her line of work to wear anything else. She was a detective and a dang good one. Emma was glad that she stuck with her gut and wore shoes that made the most sense. After all, no one complained when a man covered in blood burst into the ballroom, and Emma was able to immediately pursue. There was absolutely no way she would be able to do that in heels, no matter what the action movies tried to portray. Running in heels was pretty much impossible. Emma wasn’t sure where this guy had come from, or why he was covered in blood. She and her colleagues were standing in the grand ballroom in one of the biggest event centers in her city. It was packed with people, and truthfully, even Emma was surprised that she managed to spot the guy running away. Everyone was excited to see the symphony, including Emma. Afterward, there were supposed to be drinks, and she knew that the handsome detective from the other county office was going to be there. That’s why she had done her hair up all nice and wore some make-up. She hoped it was smudge-proof. When the man covered in blood ran into the room, no one moved. It was as if a spell of shock and horror fell across the room. No one kn ew what to say , and they couldn't be blamed either. It was not like people were trained on how to react when someone covered in blood emerged from backstage. Emma wanted to ask him what happened, but even she knew that she had to catch him before she could ask him any of these intense, pressing questions. And that was where the flats came in. “STOP!” She screamed after being snapped out of her stupor. “POLICE!” The man covered in blood jumped. His eyes were wide, bugged out. For a second, Emma wondered if he was high on something. She wouldn’t be surprised, but that would make him much harder to catch. She started parting her way through the crowd - pushing the warm bodies to and fro, trying to make sure that she could get to the man in time. Luckily, people seemed to be making a way for her. However, they couldn’t move out of the way quickly enough. The second that the man made eye contact with Emma, he took off. Emma groaned. Sometimes, she wondered how much easier her job would be if she could reveal that she was a cop just a smidge later than on the immediate chase, but she knew that would be wrong. “MOVE!” She ordered from the crowd. Luckily for her, they obeyed. They split ways for her like a parting sea, and she sprinted after the man. The purse that she wore to match her dress hit against her thigh as she pushed forward. In her purse were her walkie-talkie and her pistol, though she hoped it wouldn’t have to come down to that. Her walkie-talkie was turned off because she didn’t want it to go off during the performance. She took off at a full sprint out of the grand ballroom, emerging towards the hallway which led to the entrance. Emma scanned the room and saw nothing. She cursed. For a second she thought she lost him until she noticed the blood trail heading down the stairs that led to the basement. At least this man was avoiding being seen by the public. She took a small moment to open her purse and turn on her walkie-talkie. “This is officer Pepper,” she said into the microphone. “I am pursuing a Caucasian male on foot, about six feet, covered in blood, outside the Grand Ballroom in the city.” She didn’t wait for confirmation that it went through. Instead, she pressed on. She
