Cover designer: Fiona Jayde Media Immortal Sins/Anya J Cosgrove ISBN Created with Vellum “Fire that’s kept closest burns most of all.” -William Shakespeare 1 THE SECRET LOVERS “Should I hang it behind the desk? Or is it too much?” Daniel Osbourne asks. He presses the forty-inch painting against the wall to show me the effect. The canvas depicts a battle sword with its silver blade parallel to the ground. Red dragon scales and swirling fire weave around the majestic weapon and spark a sense of pride in my heart. Perched on the leather chair in the corner of the room, I give him a thumbs up. “Looks great there. It contrasts nicely with the white wall.” Dark Falls is ours. Celeste Draco’s old office needs to be spruced up. The midday sun spills between the seams of the closed blinds, and dust sticks in the air. Dan puts the painting down and walks over to me. “What are you doing? Spying on your sister? Who cares if she dates some werewolf?” The little blue dot signalling Jules’ location pulses on the screen of Daniel’s tablet. We were all tagged when we arrived at the Academy, so Daniel being headmaster allows me this perk. “Jules is not dating Jeremy, but she’s been to his place four times in the last week. It’s suspicious.” “Your sister is an angry kitten in a litter of wolf cubs. Even if she were to find out the truth about us, who would believe her?” He kneels in front of me and steals the tablet from my hands. “Now, why don’t we christen this room properly?” My eyes flick over to meet his playful gray stare, and warmth slithers inside my previously constricted chest. “You said she wouldn’t derail our plans when she arrived, but then Cole took an interest in her, and we had to rethink everything.” With both hands around my face, he places a sweet kiss at the base of my jaw. “Which worked in our favor in the end. If your sister defends Cole now, everyone will think she’s just another dumb girl in love with a Fae.” “It wasn’t just Cole.” I watch his expression closely for a tell, a sign that I didn’t imagine his own interest in Jules. “Trent Darkwood, Lydia Hawks, Flynn Verinos, Olson Lewis, Miss Eillis—” His index finger slices through the air and lands smack in the middle of my chest. “Don’t say her name.” Realizing my mistake, I press on the shoulders of my dragon and bat my eyelashes. “Jules is more resourceful than you think. If she figures out that I used angel dust on Cole and not the other way around, people will rally around her.” “We still have some dust to bring her to our side.” He picks me up to straddle him. I scowl, my thighs stiff on each side of him. “You agreed not to use it on her. You promised.” “It’s a last-resort option.” He unbuttons my blouse. “But your sister isn’t as smart as you think.” “Maybe you’re right.” “I’m always right.” Grinning from ear to ear, he deposits me on his large, mahogany desk. “We accomplished it all, my love. I’m headmaster of Dark Falls, and we have the horn in our possession. No one can touch us now.” Gosh, I hope he’s right. Pray to the Dark Gods he is. A loud knock startles us both, and Dan jumps away from me. “Oz? Are you alone? I need to speak with you,” Mr. Brady, the divination teacher and heart-throb horse shifter, says through the door. I fumble with the buttons of my blouse, but Dan points to the desk. “Hide under it. Quick. Jack can’t know you’re here.” The legroom nook is twice as big as me, so I slip inside without a hitch. Light streams through a wide crack in the wood. I press my eye to it in time to see Mr. Brady walk into the room. My boyfriend clicks his tongue. “What is it, Jack?” The horse shifter tucks his hands in the pockets of his faded blue jeans. “We need to discuss the Fae students’ situation. I’ve received quite a few pressing interview requests from Immortal News Today. Rumors fly that the students have been taken hostage.” I grin at that. Serves the elves right to be stuck here. Their so-called monarchs are apparently too busy to bother with their fate. Flynn and Jess don’t hold enough political weight to deserve a swift rescue, and Dan’s rise to power at Dark Falls means that their manipulative reign has finally ended. Mr. Brady inches closer to the desk. “Their request to return home for a few days between the quarters has been denied.” Dan’s legs block my sightline. “How does that equate to being held hostage?” “They want to know
