Then there was her. The one pair of glittering brown eyes that had me overstaying my welcome when everyone else was saying my time was up. I had been watching her dance for the last hour, and now she was putting on a show. The men watched closely to see how I might respond. I ignored them and continued to watch the woman I had named Tiny Dancer. She looked into my eyes and pushed her slender fingers through her straight jet-black hair, did a dramatic move with her hips before letting her hair cascade down the center of her back. The temptation was beyond real, and there was no place else I’d rather be. Tiny Dancer slithered like a venomous snake and was hotter than the local firewater, Aguardiente, I was drinking. With each swivel of her hips, turn of her body, she was inching her way closer to me, and everyone knew it, too. The world around me disappeared and, in that split second of time, when it was only her and me, I forgot about the mission, thinking only about how much I loved the women in this part of the world. Frankly, I was surprised it had taken her so long to notice me. I was the only white man crazy enough to choose this ‘locals only’ bar as the place to have a couple of drinks. It wasn’t like Turbo, a port city on the coast of Gulf of Urabá, in the Colombian province of Antioquia was high on the list of destinations Americans wanted to visit. Turbo was noisy, CHAPTER TWO Tiny Dancer spun in a complete circle before pulling me onto my feet. I wasn’t much of a dancer. I had always considered it a spectator sport, but there was no way I was going to say no to her. She placed my hands on her bare hips and I latched on and followed her lead. The way she moved had me heating up. Everyone who wasn’t watching before had stopped what they were doing to see the gringo make a fool of himself. She pressed her body against mine and the spectators seemed to sit forward at the same time. I didn’t like the attention I had brought on myself, but I also wanted to see where this led. Besides, it gave me reason to discreetly keep one eye on the men. I had studied Blanco’s detail brief extensively prior to my arrival and knew these men were part of his organization. They were the reason I was here. Easily identified by their snakeskin boots, expensive suits, and gold jewelry. They were the men with money. The people who funded and controlled the city of Turbo. Tiny Dancer must have known I was paying closer attention to them than her, because next thing I knew, she was facing me, hanging off my neck and saying into my ear, “This is not a safe place for you to be.” I whispered into her ear and said, “Yet you haven’t told me to leave.” “So long as you stay with me, you’re safe.” Even as she said it, I continued to stare at the men, just to let them know that I had been warned and still wasn’t afraid of them.
