Cover art by Darling Book Designs Editing by Sarah Baker ACKNOWLEDGMENTS For the SC ladies who constantly urge me on, even when my self-doubt arises. The wonderful Kaci, who volunteered to proofread for me. JJ “C’mon, JJ. You’ve been working round the clock for the last two months to get the program up and running, and we are almost positive all back doors have been secured. Everyone has done their job. It’s done now. We … you need a break. You deserve it. You know what they say, all work and no play …” my best friend and bodyguard, Brodie, whines at me. We’ve known each other almost practically all our lives. He and his group of friends took me under their wings, accepting my nerdiness. They looked out for me when the bullies picked on me. When I started Jonah Corp, a software design company for banks and high-end companies, I thought it was natural to ask him and my other best friends to join me. After all, they have been my biggest supporters. I may be the CEO, but every one of the men in this room owns a piece of this company. My family however, haven’t been as supportive as my friends, but probably because they don’t understand why I was so different to my brother, Jordan. My brother, Jordan, who is four years older than me, played every sport he could while I was into computers and technology. While we both excelled at what we did, my parents didn’t understand technology was where my mind worked best. Jordan went off to university, and when I made my first million at sixteen, starting Jonah Corp at eighteen, I paid for what Jordan’s part-scholarship didn’t. Mom and Dad stopped laughing after that, but they still don’t get it. Mom is a waitress in a coffee shop downtown, and Dad owns and runs a hardware shop nearby. My having a one hundred and sixty IQ is a puzzle to them. I know they love me; they just don’t understand me. When I paid off their mortgage on the house and the business, my parents became angry at me. Mom says Dad doesn’t want people thinking they’re leeching off me. Dad says Mom is worried people will assume they’re asking for handouts. I merely wanted to ease their burden. At least Jordan allowed me to buy him a three-bedroom apartment near his university. I hear he and his friends have been partying non-stop ever since they moved in. Jordan constantly invites us all to join him, but partying isn’t my scene. He often tells me I need to loosen the hell up. The more money I made, the more strained the relationship between my parents and I became. Eventually, I bought an apartment building in the heart of Boston and moved out, taking my four best buddies, Max, Tennison, Steven, and Ellis with me. Brodie joined us a year later, after being wrongly imprisoned, but that’s his story to tell. “Earth to JJ,” Brodie interrupts my reminiscing. I rub my face and sigh. Maybe Brodie’s right. A break would be good. I can’t remember the last time I did anything not work related. “Where would we go, Bro? My face is everywhere since I won the Businessman of the Year award. Gold diggers are already coming out of the woodwork.” Last week, some model told reporters she was having my baby. I have never even met the woman. At twenty-five, I have had to resort to joining an elite sex club merely to have sex, with a side of kink. I’ve not had the opportunity to meet a normal woman and go on a normal date. The women I do meet either can’t carry an intelligent conversation, have dollar signs in their eyes as soon as they see me or both. The door to my office opens and my other three best friends stroll in. “So, have you told him yet?” Max glances at Brodie, one eyebrow arched. “I’m getting there. You all came in too soon. I haven’t had a chance,” Brodie answers sarcastically. Spinning to face them, I throw my shoulders back and shove my hands in my pockets as I scan each face in turn. Why do I get the feeling I’m being played? “Alright you idiots, what’s going on? What haven’t you told me?” Each man looks to the next,
