They had to be drifting for hours without a sense of direction, muscles aching and sore from the battering waves. Now they were so far out and could see only each other, their faces close, their arms wrapped around a log Helen had grabbed hold of while the current had swept them down a dangerous river.Every time Helen’s eyes drooped, Lana nudged her. “Helen, try to stay awake.”Raindrops falling on her, Helen shivered, and behind her blueish lips, her teeth chattered. Sleepily, she opened her eyes and stared at Lana in front of her, Lana’s breath warming her when she spoke. She tried to move closer, but it unsteadied the log.“I can’t feel my feet,” Helen cried, wondering if some sea creature bit them off. “I can’t feel them.”“They’re just numb from the cold.”“My feet aren’t there. I know it. Oh god!”A sudden panic overtook Helen, and she tremored uncontrollably, hyperventilating, splashing water and letting go of her only floating device.“Helen! Stop!” Lana yelled, but Helen thrashed about in a frenzy until she gasped and sputtered for air. She dipped beneath the water, and when she resurfaced, she was further away from Lana.Lana had to think quickly. Let go of the log and lose it in the current, or save Helen Hales from certain death?Fuck! She freed her grip from the log and swam across to Helen, grabbing her and trying to keep both their heads above water.Lana looked back at the log slowly ebbing out of range. With Helen in one hand, Lana used her other hand to swim back to the lifesaver. Safely hooking her arms around it, she looked at Helen crying as she held onto the log once more.“You’ll get yourself killed,” Lana said.“I’ll die anyway.”“You won’t.”They remained in the vast ocean for they didn’t know how long, light rain pouring down their worn faces as they gently rocked in the water, almost peaceful-like now.“A boat will pass, and they’ll find us,” Lana said.Helen didn’t listen. “My poor girls. My babies.”“And they’ll rescue us.”“Emma is going to forget me. Oh god! They’ll forget who I was.”“Hey, look at me.” Lana shook Helen. “We’re not going to die. People are looking for us right now as we speak. I’m sure of it. You’ll see. Just wait, and don’t fall asleep.”But more hours passed that felt like torturous days. Only when Lana opened her eyes and saw Helen silently slipping away from her, eyes closed and body stiff, did Lana realize that they had fallen asleep. Or was Helen dead? She grabbed Helen by the neck of her white jacket and pulled her back to the log. Luckily, her arms moved as she put them around the wood then pressed the side of her face against it. Two more minutes, and she would have gradually floated out of sight and out of reach.“Helen?” Lana called, but Helen barely moved, didn’t speak.Lana shivered and did as Helen; pressed her tired face against the log, wanting to close her eyes and sleep. She stared at Helen again, that her lips were the shade akin to that of a dead person, her hair wet.“Helen?” Lana softly touched Helen’s lips then placed her palm in front of Helen’s nose. Faint breathing tickled her, and she shook Helen again. No use. Something had to be wrong. Could it be possible that Helen’s legs were actually cut off and eaten by something and she was bleeding out?Blood in the water meant sharks would have already circled and preyed on them, so Lana threw that theory out the window.A bit at ease with that, Lana shifted only because she wanted to feel her body which grew increasingly numb by the minute. Then she saw it like hope in the distance — a foggy mass of greenery ahead of them.“Helen! Helen, get up!” she screamed, violently jolting Helen awake. “Look!” Lana pointed.Helen looked behind her, then back at Lana. “What is it?”“It’s land. We made it.”“I don’t see it.”But Lana could see it, hazy but real. “Come on. Help me paddle,” she said, vigorously treading water with one hand and hanging onto the log with the other.Helen sobbed. “I can’t. My arms and legs don’t work.”Lana continued, the end of their turmoil clearly in sight. Too difficult hanging onto Helen, who still clung to the log, Lana’s hand slipped away from Helen’s jacket. And like a piece of driftwood, Helen was moving away from her.“Helen!” Lana pulled her and paddled for the shore. Almost there, her arms and legs were as if replaced with leaden weights, dragging her down. But she persevered until, at last, sand touched below her feet. She helped Helen out of the water, who couldn’t walk, and collapsed on the sand, the lower half of her body in the water, the rest on the earth, her eyes closed and body near lifeless.Lana dragged her and pulled her beneath a coconut palm. She could feel it now, the same thing Helen felt; a complete lack of energy or
