EPILOGUE Chapter 1 CHAPTER ONEAbigail Taking a deep breath, I stared at the imposing door in front of me, my hand flexing at my side. Was this crazy? Was I being crazy? This job isn’t what I really wanted. I didn’t want to be a nanny for some rich family on the Upper Eastside. I wanted to be a novelist. I wanted to write books that drew people in and changed their perspectives of the world.Unfortunately for me, I couldn’t make a living writing books if I couldn’t find a publisher to actually publish my books. Rent needed to be paid, groceries needed to be bought, and I couldn’t continue living on Ramen noodles and grilled cheese sandwiches. So, there I was. Standing outside the door of a lavish, white-brick townhouse on one of the most expensive blocks in the city. It was three stories with black, wrought-iron detailing along the windows. It was one of the wider townhouses, which meant it had to be massive inside. I stared at the large black door, trying to build up the courage to ring the doorbell and go in for my interview. The part of me that wanted to just walk away was overwhelmed by the part of me that was going to be sick if I didn’t eat a vegetable soon.Taking another deep breath, I raised my hand and pressed the elaborate doorbell. I heard it ring, sounding almost like a gong. I flinched. Seemed a bit over the top, but I was broke and couldn’t afford a doorbell gong. Maybe I’d want one if I had more money than I knew what to do with.A few moments later, the door was opened, and an older woman in a simple, black dress and apron stood in the threshold. She furrowed her brow, appearing almost curious.“Can I help you?” she asked.“Hi, I’m Abigail Bruns,” I answered. “I’m here to interview with Mr. Grave about the open nanny position?”Her eyes lit up with realization, and she nodded. “Oh, yes. He’s expecting you. Please come in.”She stepped aside and gave me room to enter the house. I gazed around and tried not to let it show in my expression how awestruck I was by the interior of the home. It was all black-veined marble, dark wood, and rich décor. A large chandelier hung from the ceiling above me, lighting up the foyer with a bright white glow.“Right this way,” the housekeeper said, turning to lead me down a hallway past the spiraling staircase that went up to a second floor. I followed after her, more intimidated and uncertain of my decision than I had been standing out on the step. This world was not one I was familiar with. I didn’t grow up poor, really, but my family was as far removed from the Upper Eastside and this extravagant house as Cleopatra was from the building of the pyramids. We came up to a large door, and the housekeeper opened it without a word. She turned and gave me a polite smile.“You can go on in and take a seat,” she instructed. “Mr. Grave will be along shortly.”I blinked, surprised. I’d expected him to be waiting for me…I wasn’t exactly early.“Okay, thank you,” I murmured, slipping past her to go into the room. She shut the door behind me, and I paused to gaze around. It was a spacious room with floor-to-ceiling windows along two walls. The other walls had built-in bookshelves filled with the types of leather-bound tomes and expensive knickknacks one would expect in a place like this one. A large desk sat across from me, behind which sat a large black leather chair.“Bet it’s made of mahogany,” I grumbled as I moved to sit in one of the smaller chairs in front of the desk. Blowing out a breath, I checked my watch and felt a sting of annoyance. Where was this guy? In the email I’d received that had all my instructions for today, I’d been told in no uncertain terms not to be late. Mr. Grave would not tolerate tardiness, which was why I’d been on the verge of a heart attack when I’d been a few minutes late.Yet, there I sat, time ticking by as I waited for the man himself to make an appearance.A full fifteen minutes passed before the office door finally opened. Swallowing my irritation, I turned in my chair to greet my potential new employer but froze when my eyes settled on him.Holy crap. He was gorgeous.Tall with broad shoulders and a jawline that could cut glass, Mr. Marcus Grave immediately made the room feel smaller than it had before. He had black hair that was styled and slicked back, and his stormy gray eyes flashed to me for a single instant before he walked toward his desk.I stared at him, struck speechless, for several moments before I realized that he had his cellphone pressed to his ear and was talking into it. Hold on…what the actual hell?“I don’t care how much it costs to expediate the process, Louis. The potential profits will make it worth it in the end,” he said in a cool, matter-of-face tone as he rounded his desk and
