The nurses talked with each other, and a patient was waiting to be seen. I felt like I could take a breath for a moment and think. There was much that needed to be done, and I had to perform at my best in the coming weeks if I hoped to be voted in for the seat on the board of directors. It was an opportunity I couldn’t refuse, and something I’d hoped for, for a long time. All I needed to do was keep my staff on their toes, so nothing went wrong, and work hard. I had a lot of ideas for the hospital, and I knew the only way I could make them all happen was as a member of the board. My daughter, Virginia, was happy too because it would mean a shift in my career, which would give me more free time to spend with her when she was in town. “Dr. Mason, the residents arrived five minutes ago. I told them to wait in the break room for you.” The nurse practitioner, and a good friend of mine, Stephanie, smiled from the doorway to my office. Mindlessly I waved her words away and finished my sandwich, a luxury I usually never got. “I’ll be there in a second, we might as well give everyone a moment's peace, before all hell breaks loose again around here. It is flu season, as you know, and if we don’t have twenty more people show up in the next hour, I’ll shave my head bald.” She smiled—the response I hoped for and got. “Okay, fair enough.” She stepped away as I finished the last bite of my sandwich. It was always either sleep or food and today it was food. Five minutes later, the food was successfully consumed, I dusted the crumbs off my tie and wished I’d had the common sense to take off my jacket before a blob of mustard found its way onto the white fabric. Rather than waste any more time, I hurried to get a quick meeting over with before the next wave of patients rolled in the door and we were unable to take a breath, let alone have a thought about anything other than medicine. “Good morning, everyone. I want to welcome you to Cedars Sinai as you—” My eyes landed on a beautiful, but very familiar face. Trinity Coleman, a friend of my daughter’s. For a moment, I lost my train of thought and what I was about to say, as I was shocked to be seeing her here, instead of at another hospital. I cleared my throat and continued. “As you begin your journey to being one of the best doctors in America, know that we don’t go lightly on our residents. We always expect 150%. You’ll be sleep deprived, hungry, pushed to your emotional limits, and you’ll probably have moments when you think you can’t make it. Not everyone does. Most do not, in fact, but if you do, your gifts will help many.” I turned and walked the length of the room, focusing my energy anywhere but on Trinity. She was going to be a problem, a big problem for me on many levels, and for just a moment, I thought about requesting that she be moved to another hospital. “I expect you to report to me, maintain good grades, and learn a lot. I want to be impressed. I know you all have a lot to learn, as you put your education from books into real-world practice. Hopefully, I can learn something new from all of you.” I turned, and instantly my eyes were drawn to Trinity. I smiled, and she smiled in return, warming my heart. I glanced around, noting that none of the others, including Nurse Rachel, missed the smile between us. Rather than ignore it, I immediately addressed the elephant in the room, so my daughter's friend could understand where I stood. “Ms. Coleman and I know each other. She is a friend of my daughter’s.” I pinned her with a stare then. “Don’t think you’ll be getting any special treatment or personal favors.” Innocently, she nodded her head, and I was confident she understood perfectly well. With a responding nod, I walked out of the room. The intercom sounded, signaling a code blue patient was about to arrive. “It’s about to get messy around here, so I hope no one is queasy.” I left the nurses there and headed
