But that doesn’t mean I want to see it every goddam day. “Would you two at least try to keep it in your pants when you’re in the office. I’m tryin’ to eat here and you're making me nauseous,” I tell Belle and Val as they suck face not four feet from me. Belle shoots me the bird over Val’s shoulder when Val pries his mouth from hers. I return the gesture and then go back to picking at my doughnut. It doesn’t take long for the breakroom to fill as everyone arrives for the weekly morning meeting. I should be sitting up at the table, but I’m still sprawled on the couch against the far wall, my booted feet hanging over the armrest when Dad walks in. He casts me a questioning glance, so I heave myself up and then deposit my ass in my usual spot at the huge timber table with everyone else. Ariel leans into my side, murmuring, “You good?” I nod and keep my focus on the head of the table as Dad hands out case files and mutters, “Peachy.” I can feel Ariel’s eyes attempting to bore a hole in the side of my head, but I ignore her. She knows where I was last night and the many nights before that. “You can’t keep this shit up, Snow. It’s not healthy,” she hisses under her breath. It takes everything I have not to snort at the absurdity of that statement. “It’s better than therapy,” I whisper back. When Dad’s gaze slides our way, we clam up like good little girls and begin paying attention. After a few minutes of the same old spiel, my mind wanders to more exciting things. Like the heart-racing satisfaction I felt in the wee hours of this morning when I tracked that pervert down and showed him what it’s like when a woman fights back. My lips curve in a rare smile as I picture his wide-eyed and terrified expression when I held my blade to his balls. “She’s doing it again, make her stop.” Valentine’s voice cuts into my happy place, so I scowl at him. He releases a relieved sigh and says, “There she is, that’s better.” I arch a brow and he shrugs in response. “You creep me out when you smile. It’s unnatural.” He’s not wrong, so I let it go. Everyone except my sisters starts clearing out of the room. I scrub at my eyes for daydreaming through the entire meeting. Valentine blows a kiss to Belle as he peers back at her over his shoulder moments before he closes the door behind him, leaving us alone. My gaze sweeps from Belle—who’s sitting across from me—to Meg at the end of the table, then to Ariel at my side. “What?” I deadpan. My oldest sister, Meg, speaks up first. “You need to stop this vigilante bullshit you’ve been pulling. It’s dangerous and we’re worried about you.” Leaning back in my chair, I lace my fingers behind my head. “If this is some kind of intervention, shouldn’t Kida be here too?” That’s how we do these things. If there’s a problem, we handle it between the five of us. The Hunter sisters stick together and have each other’s backs, no matter what. Always have; always will. Ariel opens her mouth to speak when the door bursts open and a flustered Kida practically falls into the room. “Sorry I’m late! Bosco accidentally ate my cell again, and I had to take him to the doggy doctor on my way here. What’d I miss?” she asks in a rush as she kicks the door shut behind her and then collapses into a chair between Meg and Belle. We all stare at her—none of us surprised that her doofus dog ate her cell but all of us wondering how it was an accident, seeing as it’s the fourth time he’s done it. “It wasn’t an accident, Keeds. It’s an established pattern of behavior,” Meg says. Our youngest sister immediately gets defensive of her baby. “It wasn’t his fault this time. I told Arlo that bacon is one of the best smells in the world—because it is—and he thought it would be funny if he bought me a bacon-scented phone case, and everyone knows how Bosco feels about bacon.” Kida and her boyfriend have some weird as fuck inside jokes, and this one doesn’t even come close to the weirdest.
