Prologue Denton “Well, well, it looks like another notch of disappointment under your belt, doesn’t it?” Sitting at the desk in my office isn’t the place I expect to hear such words. My sanctuary, the place where I work, is my pride and joy. So what if it’s not a big-wig office in a high-rise building in the middle of the city with secretaries waiting on hand to take care of my every need? So what if I don’t have a large oak desk, an expensive car, and million-dollar suits filling my closet at home? It doesn’t make the work that I do any less important. I stop the horrible thought and take a breath. She’s still my mother. I could never do that to her. “This is a real job. I get paid. I have employees. I stay here from nine to five and even work extra shifts. I’m doing something I care about. Isn’t that enough?” I know as soon as the words leave my mouth that they’re a mistake. Nothing I ever do will be good enough for my parents. “No. It’s not. And frankly, I don’t like your tone of voice.” My mother steps into my office and slams the door behind me. I let her drone on, ignoring all of what she’s saying except for her questions. Because if she realizes that I’m not listening and don’t answer them, then this will drag on even longer and with even more violent language being used. “Have I made myself clear?” she finally asks and I tune back in.
