I think I’m in shock. I haven’t ever felt this way before. I’m speechless, I can hardly even see straight. Knowing that I’m leaving the office building for the very last time has me reeling. Mostly because it isn’t fair. I cross the road, putting some distance between me and work—well, my old workplace now, I suppose—before I call my best friend. I don’t have any idea what to do, but Colleen will. She always knows what to do; that’s why I’ve refused to ever let her go since we first sat next to one another in math class in middle school. She’s my rock, and I’m never going anywhere away from her. “Zara, hi!” Colleen’s upbeat tone almost knocks the tears flying out my eyes. I don’t want to weep over a shitty job when I don’t even deserve to be in this position, so I fight off the urge. “How’s it going?” “Urgh, Colleen, I’m a shit show. My asshole boss just fired me. Can you believe that? Over nothing. Absolutely nothing. Not anything that I did wrong anyway. I don’t even work in that part of the tech department, but of course Mr. Cooke doesn’t care about that. I swear he just wanted me gone because I was the only woman in the tech part of the business and he didn’t want me there.” “Sexist pig,” Colleen spits out, full of rage on my behalf. “I hate him. So much so that I’m kind of glad that you aren’t going to be in an office with him again. He treated you like shit and made the job painful when it didn’t need to be.” I sigh heavily. “Yeah, I get all of that. It wasn’t like I loved the job or anything, but I’m just incensed because it’s so unfair. He didn’t even check with Brad and Rhett, who I’m pretty sure are to blame for the technical error. He just went straight for me …” Oh shit, the tears are coming. There’s a burning at the top of my nose as my eyes give up and let the wetness splash down my cheeks. They’re tears of frustration, not sadness, because Colleen is right. I don’t want to see Mr. Cooke again. If I never have to look that man in the eyes again it’ll be way too soon for me. I am so angry that simply being a woman is enough to get me fired. I’ve found that a lot, actually, no matter what role I work in. Being a woman in a man’s world is bullshit. I would love to be able to change that. Colleen has done it. She’s a really successful event planner and doesn’t seem to have any issues … One day her company will be big enough to maybe hire me, so maybe then I can be an event planner too … or someone in that world. At least I know she won’t treat me like shit. But until that time comes, I have to keep fighting in the job market, whatever state it’s in. “Well, I know this sucks, Zara, but I might have just the thing to cheer you up.” “Really?” I ask doubtfully. Unless it’s some kind of dream job with a kick ass paycheck, I don’t know if Colleen really has anything for me. Then again, she has never let me down before, so I don’t know why I’m holding on to any doubt. “You know that big event I’ve been planning forever?” I nod even though she can’t see me. “Well, the party is tonight. It’s a yacht party to celebrate the birthday of some billionaire.” “Billionaire?” I scoff. “Billionaires don’t actually exist do they? I can’t even begin to imagine having that much money. I actually can’t even begin to imagine what it’s like to not worry about each bill as it comes up in the month, so …” Colleen laughs appreciatively. “I know right, tell me about it. But this guy is a legit billionaire. It’s crazy. And this party is going to be crazy as well.
