As I am a British writer, the book is written in British English. CHAPTER ONE NOVA Fresh tears ran down my face, mingling with raindrops as the coffin was lowered into the grave. The black umbrella hung at my side, my fingers wrapped loosely around the handle. I didn’t have the strength to lift it. It had taken three months for Jaxon to succumb to the cruel disease that had ripped him out of my life. I had left my job at the non-profit to care for him, since we couldn’t afford a nurse, and our meagre savings had quickly dwindled with doctor visits, medicine, food, and bills. I was a month behind on rent, and I hadn’t eaten in four days. My body was starting to waste away too. The gravestone had taken the last of our money. Jaxon was a lone wolf from a distant pack, like myself, and I refused to let him go into some pauper’s grave as though no one cared for him, because I did. He was my whole world, my reason for living, and I had loved him so much. I needed something solid to prove he’d been real, the one chink of sunshine in my life of darkness. The priest stopped speaking and moved over to touch my hand. I nodded at him, my eyes fixed on his mouth, but I heard nothing as he murmured something to me. He smiled kindly and walked away as the gravediggers began to fill in the grave. I bent down and took a handful of dirt. It was more like mud in the heavy rain, cold and sticky, coating my fingers. I opened my hand and let the compacted lump roll off my palm into the grave below, wincing at the thud it made when it hit the coffin, and then I took a couple of steps back, watching the diggers continue their work. I wiped my hand down the front of my dress, leaving a smear of mud on the short skirt. It wasn’t really appropriate for a funeral, but it was the only black dress I owned. Low cut and tight around my breasts, it flared out over my hips and fell just over my ass. Jax said that I looked killer in it. I’d been wearing it when we first met. It was a chance meeting in a dark nightclub where I’d often gone to lose myself in the music and alcohol, and sometimes a man’s arms. Our eyes had met, and he’d held out his hand, asking me to dance. He’d pulled me into his arms, and we danced, our gazes never wavering. Energy hummed in the air, and the hair on my arms stood on end. The wolf inside me sat up with interest, her head cocked to one side as she studied this new human. I had felt her approval, and the thought had filled my mind—mate. I’d told her humans didn’t have mates, but I couldn’t deny the attraction I’d felt that night or every night after. I’d taken him back to my place, and he’d not looked twice at the state of the place or the half-conscious druggies we’d stepped over in the hallway. He’d barely even let me close the door to my tiny apartment before he’d pushed me back against it, his mouth finding mine as his hand slipped under my insanely short skirt to find the damp heat that waited for him between my legs. The first time had been everything I thought I’d needed—a hard, fast fuck that made me explode around his cock, my nails digging into his shoulders through the fabric of his shirt. We hadn’t even bothered removing our clothes. I thought he’d leave when he was done, but he didn’t. He took my hand and pulled me onto the bed with him before slowly peeling off my clothing. The second time had been everything I actually needed, with slow, gentle caresses and kisses as he made love to me over and over until dawn, when we finally fell
