I dash through the hallways like a gazelle dodging lions, hoping to make it to class without being shoved against the line of hard, metal lockers that are posted along every hall in this small school. Cottonwood Falls is a tiny town tucked away in the hills of Kansas, so everyone knows everyone and from the consensus I’ve acquired through the years, everyone hates me. I turn the corner, proud that I’m almost to English class and I haven’t been targeted yet, but my luck is always two inches from burning out. As I come closer to my last class of the day, I’m suddenly sideswiped against the wall, my head smacking into an open locker while a hoard of deep, masculine laugher rolls in response. My partly open backpack goes flying and everything inside scatters on impact. I blink up through the spots lining my vison and gasp in pain, warmth pooling against the back of my head as I poke around the new sore spot that pulses there. Garrison Kline stands over me, his deep brown eyes dancing in amusement as he slaps the hands of his football buddies, each of them snickering at the sight of me trying to collect my books from the floor. He picks up my notebook, and to my horror I realize I grabbed the wrong one in the morning. He opened to the pages inside that are scribbled with notes, diary confessions, and anything else I’ve written in the blank spots through my downtime at home. I haven’t got any friends, so my journal knows more than anyone else here, which is why it petrifies me that it’s now in Garrison’s possession. I stand, straighten out my clothes, and make a move to grab the notebook, only to be met with another brash shove into the lockers. He flicks through the pages while his buddies laugh, pulling and pushing me away so he can have time to look through it. “Garrison,” I groan, tucking my long, brunette braid behind my ear. “Please, give it back. I’m going to be late for class!”He shrugs, his pale physic still sweaty from P.E., where he and the other guys exerted their energy into a game consisting of shoving and hitting—but obviously he hasn’t had enough of it today and picked me to torment. “Oh, look at this,” he says through a growing, sinister smile. He shows the football player to his left and they both burst into laughter. My face shifts from ivory to pink in a matter of rapid heartbeats. “Dear diary,” he reads, using a prissy, high-pitched voice. “No, no!” I cry, pushing forward and ripping the journal from his hands, though he manages to hang on to a few pages, ripping them out of the notebook. “Give it back, Garrison, all of it!”When I reach for the sheet, he only laughs, keeping me at bay by a grip on my shoulder, holding the paper up to continue reading the horrifying words on it. “The football game is this week and I really want to go. Rowan Marshal is supposed to start as quarterback. I wish he would notice me in the stands, but—” I finally manage to push his huge hand off my shoulder and grab the piece of paper in his fist. They all laugh, already having read the worst of it, and I hurry to shove everything back into my backpack while most of them take off down the hallway so they won’t be late to class. Garrison stays behind, shoving my back into the locker once more before his eyes drift down my tangled braid. He rips the hair tie out and pulls his fingers through my braids, causing my hair to unfold over my shoulder. “You should wear your hair out like this,” he snarls, his voice deep and menacingly harsh. “You’ll want to hide your face after I go tell your imaginary boyfriend about what I read in your diary, loser.”I hold back mortified tears as he smiles, releases me, and walks casually down the hallway. I stand still for a long moment, too stunned to move an inch. It feels like poison is racing through my limbs and making me ache all over. Death would be far too easy though, and there’s no poison worse than Garrison Kline and his notoriously unpredictable band of brothers. The only thing worse than Garrison is his best friend Rowan, the heartthrob of every girl our age in Cottonwood Falls. And soon, he will know I have a crush on him. I just wish I could be in college already, where skipping a class would be harmless and not lead to a phone call to my parents. Even the teachers despise my family, flaring their nostrils when they read out my last name in roll call. It’s not their fault they are the pariahs of Cottonwood Falls—it’s mine. They were dedicated football parents when my brother was playing at the high school. Once he graduated, and I wasn’t exactly cheerleading material, I threw myself into the debate club.
