Joseph Connelly sat up in his bed breathing hard, naked torso glistening with sweat. His throat felt raw, as if it had been him who had swallowed several mouthfuls of salty lake water. With trembling hands, he reached for the bottle of water on his bedside table, pushing long, sweat-dampened, silver-blond hair out of his dark eyes. He drank deep and long, trying to shove away the images that were still vivid in his mind. Don't think about it, don’t think about it, he chanted. But the harder he tried, the clearer the images became. Little Blaise giggling as she dug in the sand by the lakeside. The absolute joy on her face as she chased the butterfly. The sudden widening of her eyes when she... No. Stop. He had to stop torturing himself. He had more than enough to deal with at the moment. But it was during the difficult and stressful periods in his life that the nightmare made a regular appearance. Rubbing a hand over his face, he looked at the antique analog clock hanging on the wall opposite his four-poster bed in the master bedroom of his multi-million-dollar penthouse in Midtown Manhattan. He had insisted on the traditional décor to remind him of the large yellow sandstone mansion built several centuries ago on Sunny Island, an island off Boston Harbor. That place would always be home. Even if he’d spent the better part of last year running away from it. It was 4 am. From experience, he knew sleep would elude him now. He might as well get up and go for a run. Or better still, he would shift into his dragon form and go flying. A ride in the air was the best cure for the melancholy mood he often found himself in, ever since he had decided to put the quest for the magical Beithir Munros on the back burner and take charge of the many responsibilities his dad, Morgan Connelly, had so far handled. Since his life-changing diagnosis, Morgan had stepped down, and Joe had stepped up, however reluctantly. His dad was dying. When his mom DeeAnne Connelly had shared the terrible news with him a fortnight ago, when she had told him that his dad had eight to ten months left to live, Joe had felt as if the floor had caved from underneath his feet. She had shared the news with him just before he had left for Greece with his best mates, all dragon shifters, in search of the mythical, magical mountains that were capable of enhancing a metal dragon's shifter powers and prolonging the life of their human mates. He had spent his time in Greece in denial. Dragon shifters didn't die. They didn’t get cancer. They were almost invincible. Almost. Upon returning home, however, he had been forced to accept the difficult diagnosis when he saw just how much his dad seemed to have aged in a matter of months. Morgan had a rare form of blood cancer; a cancer for which there was no known cure, since nobody knew where to find the extremely powerful source of silver that was needed to rid Morgan Connelly's body of cancer. Joe was trying his hardest to try and find such a source of silver. More than once, the thought that finding his particular dragon mountain with a core of powerful, magical silver inside it might be the answer had entered his head, but the caveat to unlocking a Beithir Munro’s power was having your soulmate by your side. And Joe was never going to find his soulmate. Two of his best mates, Niall Callaghan and Ian Callaghan, might have found their happily-ever-after, but it was not for him. But whether he liked it or not, whether he thought he was ready for the responsibility that came with marriage or not, he would have to find a wife, and he would have to do it quickly. During the very first chat he’d had with his dad after returning from Greece, Morgan had reminded him of the oath he had taken on the day he had turned eighteen as per the Connelly family tradition. Morgan, the patriarch, the head of the Connelly clan of dragon shifters, was dying. The responsibility of the Connelly clan, the family business, and the burden of making sure that the Connelly line continued was now on Joe's shoulders. Amongst the metal dragons, the Connelly clan was pretty unique, since not just the male members but the female members were dragon shifters as well. Most male dragon shifters from other clans married human females, and most other shifter clans were composed of a cohort where the males were the shifters, and the females were mostly humans, since female dragon shifters weren’t as common as their
