Chapter One My breath comes in fits and starts, and my heart hammers in my ears like a thundering drumbeat. A cold sweat blankets my skin, but a horrible heat spreads through me all the same. Adrenaline makes my body tingle, my muscles trembling and my eyes widening in terror. Panic has taken hold of me, but as I stare at the man on the other side of the room—trim, proper, and handsome, but with an expression of unflinching hatred on his face—I realize I can’t move.
