She wanted so desperately to blend in with the locals of each new town that she tried to settle in until blood was shed again, and she was forced to move on. Before the dust could settle, she would be on to the next place with a heavy heart and more people to mourn. Sienna once considered that she might be cursed as a beacon for bad luck and loss, as anyone who got close to her faced the same gruesome fate. She knew that pushing others away would at least keep them safe, even if it proved to be a lonely life for her. Sat on a hard greyhound seat with the lingering images of fresh blood seared into her mind, Sienna knew it was time to go. There was nothing left in that town for her—not since they found her again. They would always find her no matter where she fled or how fast she went. It was inevitable, and Sienna found herself counting down the days until they would strike again. Despite how often they made their presence known, Sienna didn’t know who they were. When they were near, important people in her life dropped like flies. She only knew they wanted to take away every morsel of happiness from her, and they did so without hesitation. From her place on the bus, Sienna couldn’t stop her hands from shaking. The nervous jitters hit her in waves, forcing her skin to freeze with a cold sweat. The most recent accident was something she should have predicted, but in hindsight, she let her guard down and allowed the friendship between herself and a co-worker to flourish. Before Sienna could prepare herself, the girl was already dead in the café, back pressed against the counter, limp, covered in blood, and a bullet buried deep in her belly. Sienna found her before opening and now had to bear the weight of that gruesome sight. That image was burned into her mind and would surely stay there for years to come. It wasn’t the first time one of her friends was killed only for associating with her, yet it hurt just as much. She was trapped in the never-ending chase, forced to uproot and try again at a moment’s notice. Tendrils of morning light broke through the cloudy horizon and painted the sky with bright red waves. Sienna squinted through the brightness and appreciated its brilliance until her eyes shifted to the other travelers around her. There was no way of knowing if they had followed her on the bus, which meant Sienna couldn’t ever relax. She remained vigilant and scanned each person who boarded the bus before they departed. The other passengers kept to themselves and scarcely glanced in her direction, but Sienna’s adrenaline never eased. The landscape flew by her in drizzles of color and vague shapes. All the while, the bus drove down the highway, lit by streetlights and overpasses. When the sun came up, those lights shut off, and Sienna knew it wouldn’t be much longer until they reached the new town. Her new home. Exhaustion pulled at her eyelids, and her body begged for sleep, yet she wouldn’t allow it. She couldn’t rest until she was tucked safely into a motel with the shades drawn and the door securely locked. Every box in her cautionary list needed to be checked before she could relax. A familiar sensation crawled across the back of her neck and caused goosebumps to rise from her skin. Before Sienna could even try to stop the darkening of her vision, her instincts took over, and blurry images filled her mind as if her eyes had been redirected to them. The colors bled together until she could discern each shape, yet the pictures moved so quickly, much like a movie playing in her head. While her senses heightened, Sienna concentrated on the premonition to better understand its message. There was a man with a charming smile, yet she could hardly see the rest of his face because everything was distorted. The gentle beat of his laughter reverberated in her mind and echoed much like a memory, and a warm feeling cascaded across Sienna’s body. He seemed familiar, despite the fact Sienna didn’t recognize him. To her surprise, the vision panned to Sienna, and they both laughed with one another happily. They didn’t seem to have a single care in the world, and she felt at peace for a moment. Whoever he was, the man was clearly special, as her future self appeared to be completely enthralled by the mysterious man. The vision cut abruptly, and the seats ahead of her came back into view. She forced out a heavy breath and tried to grapple with the sudden switch between reality and premonition. While it felt tangible enough, like a distant experience, it wasn’t a memory. Since she was a child, Sienna could see glimpses into the future that would eventually
