CHAPTER 1 ARIN The camp looked to have been cleared out in a hurry. Arin saw it in the abandoned tents, the turned-over baskets, and the thousands of trails crisscrossing the campsite, then disappearing into nothing. No sounds remained from the rebels, no lingering scent to hint at the direction they fled. “There are multiple footprints here, but none of them trail outside this site,” Gerald, Arin’s second in command and the captain of the guardian hunters, reported, coming to stand by Arin’s side. “They must have left in haste. They didn’t bother to clean up their garbage but took care so they wouldn’t be followed. It’s the same with their scent, too; nothing if you walk far away enough from this place.” He spat at CHAPTER 2 BRI “Rosie, come back!” Bri shouted as she watched her dog run along the trail a few paces before looking back to tease and then breaking away into the surrounding forest. Willow sat on the snow beside Bri, watching her and waiting obediently though her leash was off too. Being snowed in for three days contributed heavily to Bri overlooking Rosie’s penchant for mischief. They were all going stir-crazy, and Bri was a softy for their adorable faces. Bri groaned as she stood, stroking Willow’s head. “We’ve got to hunt down your sister now,” she said, surveying the landscape. Snow covered Cook County with a thick blanket of white. While it had temporarily stopped snowing, the drifts were high, and the Boundary
