I love hearing from my readers. Please contact me at [email protected] CHAPTER 1 “Another dead end.” I wasn’t talking about the road that led back to the small house I shared with my daughter. The bushes lining the street sauntered by, but I barely noticed. Lost in my head, thinking about the malady that plagued me. “Damn it,” I said and hit the gas pedal of my car, causing the engine to roar and jump forward. My life had been a roller coaster ride since the death of my husband, Marcellus, and for the umpteenth time, I couldn’t find the solution to my failing magic. Once a powerful and reliable witch, I couldn’t make the spoon in my coffee stir on its own without the damn thing exploding. The ceramic pieces from my favorite mug were still in the trash can, waiting to go to the curb. I slapped my steering wheel. “Two days without a solution. I shouldn’t have gone to the coven retreat. What a big waste of time!” I never expected it would take this long. How can a human being be so faulty? Was I the first witch with upside-down magic? These questions rolled through my mind on repeat and before I knew it, I was going way over the speed limit. “Breena Hutchins! Get a grip over yourself,” Linda said, snapping me from my erratic thoughts. I turned to face her, taking my eyes off the blurring highway. “No, No, No, woman. Eyes on the road and take your foot off the gas, you’ll attract the cops,” she said sternly before running her hand over her perfectly pinned black hair. They joked that her white streak made her look like Cruella, but she preferred cats to canines and would collect more than a hundred if given the choice. I laughed, returning my eyes to the road. She had been more like a mother than a friend, and I was grateful she was there to keep me in check. “You don’t have to act like my mother all the time,” I shot back, and we broke into a boisterous laugh. Then, a police siren interrupted our levity. “Shit!” I said, looking at the rear-view mirror as the red and blue lights of the police car became visible. “I told you to take your foot off the gas. Now, your distracted ass just earned us a ticket,” Linda said as I frowned. Her words weren’t helping, and I hit the brakes slowly, brainstorming on my next line of action at the same time. This would have been a good time to have reliable magic. It wasn’t the first time my lead foot had gotten me into trouble, but it was the first time I couldn’t fix it. I wondered if giving it a try was worth a shot. “Don’t even think about it. I know that look. Get that thought out of your mind,” Linda said, angling her body from the passenger seat to look at me. She knew me all too well, and had witnessed my many traffic violations in the past. “I’m just going to try a memory charm to get us out of our present situation,” I said, raising my hands as our eyes met. The spell was simpler than any I’d tried since my magic went on the fritz. Linda had no intention of letting this go. “Have you forgotten what happened the last three times you tried anything magical?” “Why are you rubbing that in my face? The last time, I missed one word and turned the dog into a tiger instead of healing the poor creature and now you mock me for it?” I said and Linda laughed aloud as the cop car got closer. I knew she wasn’t really mad. She had always used sarcasm to hide her concern. “What about the first two times? When you were asked before the coven to make a potion for tree growth and your potion brought the tree to life. Or when you gave me an extra arm because you were trying to change my outfit. Did you miss a word when chanting the spell?” She teased as I scowled at her. I was thankful for her friendship despite her constant ribbing. “Those were moments of weakness,” I shot back as a well-built and
