Jenny acted purely on gut instinct, stood on her tippy toes and pressed her mouth to Tristan’s. Her mouth was warm, soft, fragile. Like a delicate butterfly’s wing brushing against Tristan’s lips. He suspected if he applied the slightest pressure, she’d fly away. Even though he longed to deepen their kiss, he stood still, keeping his hands to his sides and ordering himself to be content with her lips touching his. In the moonlight, he could see her closed eyes, could see the uncertainty on her face, could feel her body quiver. Or had that been his body? He wasn’t sure. He just knew that kissing Jenny wasn’t going to make the ache inside him go away, but rather intensify his reaction every time she was near. He hadn’t thought it would. Not really. But it had been worth a shot when she was so adamant that they couldn’t be together. He should be the one being adamant. Instead, he was shaking like a teenage boy receiving his first kiss. Dear Reader, In some ways this story was inspired by my children, as I have a daughter who is a travel nurse and a daughter who is an ICU nurse. Taking care of people is definitely in our blood, just as it’s in my hero’s and heroine’s. Tristan has attachment issues. His being a travel nurse just fit him, as not since childhood has he wanted to stay in one place. There are too many wonderful places to see and explore to ever settle down. Jenny sure throws a wrench into that plan. She’s lived in the same town her whole life, loves the connection she feels there and wants her young son to have that same sense of home. Jenny loves the familiarity, but Tristan’s a drifter. Can she convince him that love and putting down roots is a lifelong adventure worth the risk? I hope you enjoy their love story as much as I enjoyed writing it. Tristan Scott’s dark, slightly wavy hair, sky-blue eyes and infectious smile did catch her eyes too often, but she wasn’t acknowledging that to her bestie. “You just happened to look my way as I just happened to look up and he just happened to be there. That’s all.” Roger Pennington’s hazel eyes crinkled with amusement. “That’s a lot of ‘just happeneds.’” “A whole lot.” Laura’s gaze shifted to where Tristan could be seen caring for his patient through the ICU’s glass wall facing where they sat. A respiratory therapist, another nurse, and a tech were helping get his new admit settled. “But you and every other single woman who works here thinks our newest travel nurse is hot. Rightly so. If I hadn’t felt the immediate sparks between you two, I’d be all over that scrumptiousness.” Roger snickered. Jenny rolled her eyes. “If you think he’s all that, go for it.” Why had her stomach just twisted into a tight wad? Irked at herself, she lifted her chin. “You have my blessing to be ‘all over that scrumptiousness.’” “Your blessing?” Roger leaned against the rounded station desk that separated their workspace from their patients’ rooms. “What is this, like ‘olden days’ girl code or something?” Jenny pointed her finger at him. “You stay out of this.” Grinning, he held up his hands in mock defense. “Yes, ma’am.” “We’ve been friends since kindergarten,” Laura reminded. “I know you better than anyone. Deny it all you want, but you like Tristan.” “If you know me so well, then you should know that, even if I did find him attractive and was willing to become involved, which I don’t and I’m not,” she quickly added, “I’d never choose someone I work with.” “Otherwise, she wouldn’t have been able to resist dating me.” Jenny and Laura snorted. Roger, who had dated the same woman since high school and was still completely infatuated with the ultrasonographer. “You’d be a lonely man, Roger, if women got to choose who they were attracted to,” Laura teased then turned her attention back to Jenny.
