Chapter One Mason “Hey! Would you watch what you’re doing!?” I leap into action, pushing one of my workers out of the way of some falling debris. A handful of bricks come raining down and crumble into dust when they collide with the ground. I swear, being the foreman of a construction company has its perks, but it also means being a fucking babysitter. The man beneath me, Scott, looks up at me terrified, his hard hat shifted to one side. I carefully adjust it back into place with a shake of my head and a reassuring smile. “You’re alright. No scuffs or bruises, see?” I pull myself to my feet and Scott with me, gesturing to him to prove that he is, in fact, completely unharmed. “Oh my God, thank you.” He skitters back away from the uncompleted building and stares up at the men working above us. “What the actual fuck!” “Sorry,” they yell down with hands cupped around their mouths. “Oy! Sorrys don’t cut it! Get your asses down here!” “Shit...” The men hang their heads in shame and march down the ladder like children about to be put in time-out. If they’re not careful, I just might do that to teach them a lesson and dock their pay. Working at a construction company has its ups and downs. Creating safe havens for those who don’t have any is a great way to give back to the world, but it doesn’t really put a lot in my pocket and I have bills to pay. Marko has a way with words that always sways me to his side of thinking. One would think I’d know better by now and stop considering him a friend, but I can’t deny that we’re doing good work here. Now if only I could keep my men in line so that shit like this stopped happening.
