The two girls crowded in front of the mirror in their small dorm room, getting ready to attend the Annual New York University Green Leaf Gala. Every year, the University, in cooperation with the Environment club, organized a charity gala to raise money for environmental conservation projects and this year, the theme was ‘Masquerade ball.’ Chelsea Gonzales was elated! She’d never been to such a fancy party before. She had grown up in Florida with her five siblings in a two-bedroom house. Her family struggled to get by. She’d never had the chance to attend a gala, or her own prom for that matter. Her roommate, Leanne was the chairperson of the Environment club and had invited her as her plus one. They were both dressing in a hurry because they were falling behind schedule. Leanne donned a fitted, emerald gown in a classic mermaid style with a dramatic train and paired it with a pair of white gloves, white heels, and a feathered Columbian mask. Chelsea wore a deep crimson gown with a sleeveless, cowl-ruched neckline, and it had a floor-length, fitted skirt with a side leg slit and a corseted bodice that hugged her curves just right. She had curled her long, jet-black hair in waves that fell down her back. Chelsea wore a silver mask that was delicate and twirled its way through her hair with silver jewellery. She had decided to keep her make up understated and went with icy eye shadow and a red lip to match her dress. Leanne was right, she looked like amazing! The girls hurriedly finished getting ready and called a cab that took them to the Regency Hotel where the gala was being hosted. On arrival, Leanne took her hand and led her inside. “I’m sorry I have to leave you here; I have to do my rounds and make sure everything is in order. Just text me if you need anything.” With a quick hug, Leanne left her on her own. Chelsea couldn’t complain though, she was grateful for the opportunity. The majestic banquet hall was unlike anything that she had ever seen; tall ceilings, glistening chandeliers deep wooden accents. Almost too pretty to touch. Cream coloured walls covered in gold accented lights spaced evenly throughout the room. Circle tables covered in gold cloth with burgundy table runners under different height of flower centrepieces, surrounds the dance floor. Chelsea took a deep breath. Her palms were sweaty and she fidgeted with her hands. She was not accustomed to being around such wealthy people but was determined to have a nice night despite how insecure and small she felt. Chelsea steeled her nerves and went into the crowd of people. She talked to a bunch of older people and even laughed at a few unfunny jokes. Somehow, she found herself trying to get out of a conversation with a certain gentleman, whose sleazy remarks made her skin crawl. It never failed that she would attract the type of man to stare at her cleavage as he talked. Suddenly, she got the eerie feeling that she was being watched as she made her way to the bar to get her a drink. After ordering a Manhattan, Chelsea decided to people watch to figure out who was watching her. When she turned, she made eye contact with a tall man dressed in all black. His dark hair was trimmed and sleeked back, a few locks falling over his forehead, and his shaved face showed off his chiselled features. When they made eye contact, Chelsea suddenly forgot how to breathe. Everything about him, from his tailored suit to the cavalier way he held his champagne flute, screamed money. He took his time making his way towards her, walking leisurely, like a lion stalking his prey. Her breath caught in her throat. When he got to where she was standing, he said,” You look almost as miserable as I am. These things never get better do they?” Chelsea froze, was she so easy to read. She could play this out one of two ways; either tell this magnificent Greek god that she actually didn’t belong here and this was her first gala. Or pretend like she fit in with all these people just for fun and keep this stranger’s interest. The choice was obvious. “No, they don’t. Unfortunately, I’m attending another gala next weekend.” He chuckled. “That must suck. I’m Devon by the way. And you are...?” he extended his hand out. “The name is Diana. It’s a pleasure to meet you, Devon.” He took her hand and kissed the back of it. She felt sparks travel down her body. This night just got more interesting. Devon’s lips lingered over her skin, lifting his head to lock eyes with her. His green eyes got darker and had a mischievous glint in them. This man was trouble, and she knew it, but she couldn’t seem to find a reason to care with the way he was looking at her right now. “How come I have never seen you before?” She was saved from answering the question when Leanne spoke through
