Kamila Also From Ice Paw Press 1 Kamila The world around me spins when my legs are pulled off the floor. Kaeper’s arm is still on my neck, his body still behind me. The clouds are above me when the gunshot fades into the air. Am I… in the sky? In mid-air? Air from all sides squeezes onto me while buildings around me grow taller and taller. There is wind blowing from under me, but none will hold my weight. Maybe… another minute we stayed on the rooftop, my boss would shoot me and get both Kaeper and me dead. Kaeper won’t ever surrender… I grimace. The building Kaeper pulled me off from isn’t that tall, it won’t take long before I crash on the floor and for my blood to stain the floor. I’m still young, there are a lot of things I haven’t done… Owen… If I were dead, what would happen to him? He couldn’t even walk on his own still. If I disappear and die, no one will take care of him. He promised to race me to the ice cream shop when he is well again. I want to be there, not die on a stupid roadside. How will it feel to smack my head onto the floor? How hard will it take to crack my skull? Oof! A pain spreads through my whole body, there is a snap of my bones breaking, blood... No blood in my mouth, but the world shudders in front of me. Everything blurs with my body shaking. Am I dead now? Falling to my death isn’t as painful as I imagined... That’s because I’m dead, right? Dead people can’t be in pain. “Open your eyes.” It sounds like Kaeper. Am I in hell? I’m probably not a good person, so no heaven for me... Maybe the devil does sound like him. “Kamila!” Kaeper’s shout stabs at me, sending a shiver through my body. His voice is shaking and cracking. He shakes me, so much so the pain surges back into me. I moan and squirm. He stops shaking me. “How are you?” I gasp, every breath hurts. There is a humming vibration under me. I am on something and that’s moving. The sky is still up there with the sunset that burns my skin. The buildings to my sides are retreating away from me. There are car honks and people talking along the low wheezing of engines. So... I’m on a street? But I’m moving. Or is hell kind of look like the world I used to live in? That’ll be interesting. “Geez, you scared the hell out of me.” Kaeper’s arm is warm and solid on me. Maybe I’m not a good person, but am I bad enough to still be with him here in hell? He pinches my cheek. “Talk to me.” “Am I dead?” “No, don’t be silly. I’d die before you.” Oh... A stream of heat reaches my cheek. Now he reminds me how I’m right on top of him. A tinkle runs down my spine. This isn’t the right time to feel a heat in my stomach. “Where are we?” “On a truck.” “What?” “We are on a truck. Feel around you.” I reach to my sides. Other than Kaeper under me with his hot body, there are... Pillows and blankets around me. So we landed on a truck with a lot of soft stuff that took away the impact and didn’t die. “Fuck you, Kaeper!” I should hate him, but I burst out laughing. My body shakes so hard as the mix of screams and laughter escapes me. “You are fucking crazy. I thought I’m dead.” He laughs with me. “Yes, I’m crazy, and that’s how we get out of there.” “I hate you. Should have warned me.” “Is that even feasible? Come on. That’s your boss trying to kill me. Have to be a bit more creative to get away.” “Dang, how did you find a truck like this? You just jump and it’s there? Lucked out?” “Told my people to circle around here as soon as I heard Samuel wants you dead. I thought I’d have enough time to get you out of the building without running into any trouble, guess not.” “No way. You thought of a truck that’s filled up with these kinds of stuff?” “Well, leaving via the stairs will be better. I have no doubt about it. You don’t think I will get to a place filled to the brim with cops without any plan to get away alive? Plan B works.” “You really are crazy.” “You love how crazy I am.” “Dammit...” I take a deep breath. My heart is still hammering so hard that it can jump out of me. My limbs are so cold that I almost can’t feel them. I breathe out and let the tension go. I’m a pile of mess again, too tired of anything. I just fell off a building and didn’t die. Kaeper is crazy, period. Something pokes at my temple. Cold metal. My heart skips a beat. His gun. My rifle is gone, though. Maybe I dropped it when he jumped off the building. Is he still going to kill me? “What now?” “I’m supposed to have kidnapped you.” “Oh...” “Crazy, right? Keep up the good act. The safety is there, just so you know.” I blink. Guess I have nothing to
