They were ruthless and relentless, and I had to escape their clutches at all costs. I didn’t care about dignity or decorum as I scanned the shadows for a hiding place. My room was the closest refuge, but also the most obvious one. Could I risk it? Maybe they would assume I had slipped past them and fled the building. I darted inside and locked the door behind me, frantically looking around for a spot to conceal myself. Under the bed? Too easy. Behind the bed? Perhaps, but they would probably spot me once they lifted the bedspread. Somewhere in the closet was another choice. The walk-in closet was almost as big as my room had been back on Earth, crammed with clothes I could dive into. They would tear it apart if they suspected I was there, though. It was too risky. The pattern of tiny feet against the floor seemed to echo from outside the room. My time was up, they were here, and I had to act fast. I hid in the only viable place that crossed my sight: behind the thick curtains that hung over my window. It was a desperate move. The curtains were long and heavy and sagged on the floor in some places. They might hide me well enough if I didn’t make a sound. The door burst open, and my enemies stormed in. “Are you sure he’s here?” A bright and cheerful voice demanded loudly. The voice that answered her was more timid and quiet. “I am; I can smell him.” I bit back a curse at that. I knew I had forgotten something. The two females tiptoed across the room, heading for my bed, or so I guessed. The sound of cloth being lifted told me one of them had just peeked under the bed, and the loud huff that followed confirmed it. I felt a slight smirk tug at my lips, but I held it back. “He’s not under the bed.” The bright voice announced, and then more rustling followed by a thud as the owner of that voice started bouncing on my bed. I almost told her to stop, but then I caught myself, narrowing my eyes slightly. Alice should have known better. “Check the closet.” “He’s not there either.” The other voice said, then its owner walked right towards where I was. Ai’s green and blue eyes locked with mine when she drew back the curtains, and I didn’t hesitate. I smiled, reached down, and scooped her up with a growl, making her squeak. “Daddy.” She protested, even as she wriggled and squirmed as I pushed my forehead against her belly. Despite her words, it didn’t take her long to start laughing as I continued pretending to be a monster attacking her and trying to bite her tummy. She held my head as I did it, even as I carried her closer to the bed. Her sister, Alice, laughed, jumped a few more times atop the bed, and when I got close, she didn’t hesitate and pounced, forcing me to hold onto Ai with just one arm and grabbing her with the other. And then I was the one suffering attacks as Alice took charge and tried to tickle me, Ai following her lead and trying to do the same. My experience with their attempts at getting one over me allowed me to resist their attacks quite well, and I dropped them into the bed, then let them pull me in after them and put me on my back. They pounced, and I whimpered pathetically, begging for their mercy. They only granted it to me once they were tired of torturing me, then pressed against me, holding me tight. I felt my heart soar at that. Nothing made me happier than holding my daughters in my arms, knowing they were safe and sound against me, and hoping they would remain so forever. As I let my eyes rove over their frames, I knew I would do whatever was necessary to ensure it. Alice, my mischievous daughter, was a catgirl. My oldest, my little devil as well. With dark hair and blue eyes, she was a beautiful child and one that always had a smile on her lips. Her black ears twitched when I reached out and patted her head, and she burrowed her head against my hand, asking for a few scratches. I gave them to her, almost chuckling when she started purring. Unlike her sister, Ai was a bit more timid. While her sister had some of my coloring, there was no hint of me in Ai. Not that there was much of Mei either. The bunnygirl was a year and a half younger than Alice, but they looked the same age due to bunnygirls growing a bit quicker. What called attention to her almost immediately was her two-tone hair color. About half of it was pink, like Mei’s, and the other half green. It wasn’t even; there were strands of those two colors all over her head. And just like her hair, her eyes also possessed different colors, though that was a bit less noticeable. One was just as blue as Alice’s, and the other was green, the same shade as her hair. I loved them. They were my daughters, my world, and I loved them. I didn’t know what I would do without them. Somewhat tired from running all over the palace trying to find
