CHAPTER ONE Time To Hire A Nanny! (Eric Albrecht)My head spun as my mother spoke, I had known the day would come, but I never thought it would happen that soon. I looked at Jade, who happened to be playing with her Barbie doll. She didn't seem to care about what my mother was going on about, not that she understood much about adult conversations. Jade was only five years old and didn't know much about anything; all that mattered to her was that she got food when hungry and was attended to when uncomfortable. My eyes reddened a little; it was always the same when I stared at Jade for too long; she reminded me so much of my beautiful Olivia. But unfortunately, my Olivia had left me alone to cater to our beloved child."I have to go back; I can't imagine anything happening to him." My mom's shaky voice brought my attention back to her. "If you go now, what will happen to Jade?" For a moment, she turned her attention to Jade, then back to me. "It's time you hire a nanny." "Not this conversation again," I said as I slowly walked away from her. My mother had always used any opportunity she got to tell me about getting a nanny for Jade, but I wasn't buying the idea. I was not too fond of letting a stranger I knew nothing about come into my home and take care of my daughter. "We are having this conversation, Eric!" She commanded as she followed closely behind me. "You are well aware of the fact that I won't be here forever, and sooner than later you will have to find someone to take care of Jade." "But you're here now," I turned to face her. "And now I have to go," she reminded me with a concerned look. "I know you don't like the idea of a nanny, but how about someone more than that?" She paused, "Jade needs a mother figure in her life, you can't deny her that." "Mom, we've been through this before, I don't see myself settling down again," I said defiantly."Don't do it for yourself, do it for your precious baby girl. You are barely around for her, find someone who will be." "You know my job is quite demanding, I barely…" "I know that, but it still doesn't change the fact that your daughter needs you. If you're going to be away most of the time, find someone who will stay with her." "How about I find someone who will stay with dad instead, that way you can stay with us?" I said, even though I already knew the answer to that. "If it were that easy, we wouldn't be having this discussion, you know what your father is like. Do you think anyone can stand him?" The image of my dad seated on his rocking chair while muttering inaudible words flashed through my mind. He was a hard man to please, a handful, if I do say. I was his son, but I never had it easy. He always had something to complain about; nothing was good enough for him. I was used to it, but if we were to hire a nurse for him, I doubted she would last a week before she quit on him. He was just that much trouble. "Mom, as much as I want to continue this conversation, I must go now. Work calls." One would think I was shying out of the conversation, but I really had to be at work. My mother frowned at me for being evasive on the subject; it happened all the time. The next thing would be an excuse to get out of any conversation involving hiring a nanny or settling down. I dreaded the thought, I had given my heart to my one person, and it was short-lived; I had vowed not to entrust myself as I had done with Olivia. It felt impossible to do so; she was my soulmate, and I knew I could never find someone like her again. I picked Jade up and kissed her
