Through my pain and panic, I saw a sphere of light grow in a mass of darkness. Text appeared, black letters against the light. They were blurry at first, but they grew sharper with every second. Mortal, you are Awakened. The letters faded. My mind swam. It took a while for coherent thoughts to form, but when they came, I remembered where I had been and what I had been doing. I had sat behind my computer, counting down until my preload of Aerda Online activated. With three weeks off from work and a supply of my favorite junk food, I was going into a game-a-thon with a few of my old guild buddies, each one as hyped—or even more so—to play Aerda Online as I was. The last thing I remembered was the countdown timer reaching 00:00:00. Shapes swam into view, and I narrowed my eyes to make them out. A limber face peeked over a ledge to look down at me. What the… am I in some kind of pit? I tried to move, but my body was unresponsive. Fuck… Is this the game? I blinked a few times, forcing the face to stay within its lines and grow clearer. He had a fine face, firm jaw and aquiline nose with piercing blue eyes under an unruly mop of long black hair that made his face seem pale. He wore rings of a reddish material in his ears—copper, brass, or maybe bronze. The world around me took shape. A tingle in my muscles told me I was gaining control—that I could soon move. The image cleared up, and I recognized the face. It is me. I was looking at myself in the reflecting surface of a babbling creek. The smell of a forest, crisp and earthy, made its way into my nostrils. In the background, a bird chirped a merry song. My muscles were slow to wake, but I began feeling my weight pressing down on my hands. I pushed up, a groan escaping my lips, and sat. Rubbed my head, I blinked down at my body. I wore strange clothes—a gray wool hose and a dirty dun tunic with a leather belt—but the body was mine, the dirty hands moved at my command and resembled my own, except they were more callused and had more grime under the fingernails. This is the game… I studied the surrounding forest. It was springtime—the air carried a gentle, humid warmth, and the leaves hung green and fresh from the trees. The creek in front of me babbled along its rocky bed. If I had not been just transported into a game, I would have thought it peaceful. Two icons manifested in my view—one a stylized knight’s helmet, the other a yellow question mark. Shit. Even as I looked around, the icons followed my view, staying fixed at the top. The icon with the question mark began flashing, and a text appeared. Mortal, open your quest journal by focusing on the relevant icon and willing it to open. This is unreal. I fixed my gaze on the flashing question mark and a text box popped up. It was transparent, and I could by sheer force of will make it more or less so. Your Awakening Challenge level: 1 (easy) You are Awakened, Mortal. Born unto this world with limitless potential. Unfortunately, you cannot return to your old world—not now and perhaps never. Here, in the world of Aerda, you must thrive or die. Put your questions aside and gather power, for only the powerful may learn the truth. Fear not, Mortal: the Game Masters shall accompany you on these first few steps, which are always the hardest. Follow the creek to learn more. Objective: Follow the creek downstream.
