Chapter One – Owain PROLOGUE – HAILEY I can’t take any more of this, I realize as I step out of the office after another long and horrific day. This job is killing me. And to think that I actually used to like working here, once upon a time. It used to be such a great place with a brilliant atmosphere. I didn’t understand why people complained about office jobs, because mine was such a laugh. It wasn’t an ‘office politics’ sort of club. Everyone just got along. Strange for an office in Tampa. Nowhere else I’ve ever worked has been the same. I never thought it would become this. The recession has hit us hard, so I get why Bryan had to downsize, but he’s left me doing three people’s jobs with no change in pay, and he’s gotten unpleasant to be around because he’s always in a bad mood. I hate it. But I keep holding on to the hope that eventually it will go back to what it used to be. I sigh heavily as I tug my cell phone out of my bag. Of course there’s a text message, from my best friend, Michelle, reminding me I can’t go home and sleep this horrible day off. Not when she’s arranged for me to go on a blind date with a friend of a friend, Elliot something. I don’t know anything about the guy, all I know is that according to Michelle he’s perfect for me. If Michelle wasn’t so excited about this, then I wouldn’t even bother. But instead, I suck it up and respond that I am on my way. I glance down at my outfit, hoping it looks okay. I’m sure if this Elliot guy really is perfect for me, then he won’t mind me looking exhausted and a little sloppy. I can’t do anything about my appearance now, I need to focus on small talk instead. It’s been so long since I was last on a date that I can’t recall how to behave. At least Elliot has agreed to meet me at the cute little Italian restaurant around the corner from my workplace, it means I don’t need to go far. I head inside, and slip into a seat at the table Elliot booked, glad I’m here first so I can have a moment. Although I turn down the waiter’s offer for a glass of wine. If I have a drink now, I might be flat out asleep on the table before he even arrives. Sipping the lemon water and trying to steel myself for what’s to come is about the only thing I can do right now… Tick, tick, tick… I can’t take my eyes off the clock. Every second seems to take an hour to flip by, because Elliot is one hundred percent late. At first, when it was only a few minutes, I give him a pass because he could be stuck in traffic or whatever. But now nearly half an hour has passed and it’s starting to get embarrassing. I don’t even know if I should call Michelle or not, because what if I’m being stood up? That would be so embarrassing. I keep thinking he might have peered his head around the door and run off the moment he saw me. Maybe he’s not so perfect for me after all. Five more minutes, I warn myself. Five more minutes and then I’m leaving. I think it’s fully accepting that I’ve been stood up, more than anything else.
