Alex sucked a sharp breath in as I scrambled to pull on a bathrobe. With a measured exhale, she took a seat at my desk and fixed me with her famous, ‘If anything but the truth leaves your mouth, I’ll kill you’ look. She was not playing around this time. “I’m going to ask you this once, and I implore you to think before you talk.” Her gaze lingered on my hidden torso before meeting my eyes. I instantly shifted to pull my robe tighter, using it as a shield from her incoming questions. “Where did those bruises come from?” I stepped towards her as if to physically stop where the conversation was going. “Alex. They’re not wh—” She held up a hand, stopping me in my tracks. “Kam… I am ten seconds from committing multiple crimes, which include but aren’t limited to murder. I don’t want excuses, I want answers. What—no–who did that to you?” Her voice was steady, level. Too level. Alex –loud, vulgar Alex– who was always joking around, was now deadly calm. The look she was shooting in my direction showed me how deeply screwed I was. Her brows were furrowed, eyes full of anger, and mouth downturned. A complete 180° from her usual laid-back expression. “He didn’t-” I choked. “Kamaria.” “Jake.” The tears came, shamefully rolling down my cheeks, and I didn’t try to stop them. It would have been pointless to lie to her face and say otherwise. If Alex knew, then the others also did or would find Chapter 1Kam 2 Years Later Going out the night before the start of the new semester was always a bad idea. So why did I allow my sister to rope me into a night of drinking with her friends when I knew that my social battery wasn't fully charged? That was 3 hours ago, and I was still lying in bed feeling bad about cutting the night short. The silver lining was that Alexandria didn't have to leave because of me and was able to stay out later with her friends. There was a knock on the front door, which pulled me from my thoughts. Grabbing my phone from the nightstand, I called Dylan, who was most likely dead asleep. He answered after the third ring, sleep evident in his voice. "Firecracker? What's up?" "Someone is at my door and I'm going to check, so be on standby." There was shuffling in the background before he answered, voice clearer. "Got you." There was another knock at the door, this time louder. I slid out from under the covers, made my way to the door, and looked through the peephole, only to find my neighbour who lived down the hall waving at me with someone thrown over his shoulder. I unlocked the door and pulled it open, and Ethan gave me a small smile. "Can you please tell your sister that I'm going to start charging for my services?" Dylan opened his door and stepped out, a smile tugging at his lips. "I have to take a picture of this." He pulled his phone from his pocket and snapped a couple of pictures. Ethan
