It’s going to be okay, I council myself, we’re going to figure it out. Two weeks ago my parents were dropping me off at Blackwood Academy and none of us were wise to the inhabitant growing inside my stomach. I said my goodbyes, mom and dad sniped at me, everything was normal. How did it all go topsy-turvy so quickly? I’m flooded with memories, a small reminder of how I got here. It started with pissing off my roommate. Or maybe it started with pissing off the Blackwood Five. I can’t remember who I upset first. Was it the pack of demons that hated me because I was a witch? Or Lilith who hated me because I was a witch that couldn’t control my magic? Someone has always been angry at me. In fact, that’s the theme of my life: people that are always mad at me. The professors didn’t like me. Other students didn’t like me. I sort of drifted from class to class wondering how this had all happened to me. I was supposed to have the quintessential academy experience and instead I was lonely and depressed. Then the next thing I knew, Lilith was coming back from the library with a headful of knowledge that blew up my life. Was that how this all started? Or was it going to the other side of the portal? That night at Mahogany seems like it happened a thousand years ago. I don’t remember what I was wearing or why I was there. All I remember are cigarettes and hands. Lots of hands. The scent of Vale as he fucked me up against the wall. Smoke swirled around us as he slammed into me over and over again. Hands holding me aloft as I wrapped my legs around his waist and held on for dear life. The sticky dance floor. The heat of bodies all around me as I wedged myself closer to Nicodemus. He was a naughty one. We did it right there in the middle of the crowd. The twins overpowered me. It wasn’t just because Ares was on his knees licking me clean. It wasn’t the way he devoured me like a dying man’s last meal. It was his brother’s eyes boring into mine. It was the way Slade called me a filthy slut and it didn’t even feel dirty. It was the two of them tag-teaming me in a disgusting club bathroom. The way Zephyrus tasted when I took him in my mouth. Hot water crashed down around us and steam filled the room. We got dirty as we got clean. My hero, my professor. That was how it all began. Nicodemus manipulated the structure of my chemicals until I was willing to fuck five dudes over the course of the evening. I didn’t know they were demons; they didn’t know I was a witch. We shared the hottest night of my life and now we’re paying the consequences. And to think this all could have been prevented with a condom. I hate them. I hate thinking for a second that I was safe on the other side of the portal. I hate myself for what I did. But most of all, I hate the rules of the world we live in. I rest my hand on my stomach and try to feel something, anything. There’s a child growing inside of me and I’m full of rage and anger. Why isn’t it big enough to kick? Why can’t it tell me that this is all going to be okay? The only sign of its existence is the magic I spilled back at the academy and that isn’t enough to comfort me in my time of need. Little Bean, I quietly talk to the baby, hoping that my hand is enough of a connection that it hears me, I don’t know what’s going to happen to us. What if they allow you to be born and then they take you away from me? What if they don’t let you live that long? What if you rip me apart from the inside out?
