Join My Newsletter! Chapter One Kate Today is the day! I have been preparing for weeks. For someone as low profile as myself, attending one of the biggest charity ball events with my billionaire boss is definitely something worth preparing for. Aaron, the CEO of one of the biggest fashion organizations in Washington, told me he is taking me with him to the event. Unfortunately, not as his plus one, but as his assistant for work. I figure it is an opportunity I need to make the most of. Attending a charity ball event with Aaron Bennet means meeting big personalities and other billionaires who would ordinarily not give me the time of day. Of course, if I am lucky, Aaron is going to introduce me to these socialites, which could be the biggest thing to happen to me. My boss, Aaron, is good at literally everything except names. He can calculate figures off the top of his head, and know what is wrong with a layout the moment he looks it over. However, remembering names is not his forte, which is where I’m going to step in this evening. I’m good with names and many other things. I wouldn't be working for the biggest billionaire in Washington otherwise. Aaron never fails to remind me of this fact. I have spent weeks memorizing the names of all the attendees. Or at least the ones Aaron needs to shake hands with and exchange the usual slightly faux pleasantries rich people love to do. Yes, it’s work. But no one said I couldn't seize the opportunity. I unwrap the towel from my head and grin at my reflection in the mirror when the hair tumbles around my shoulders. I'd gone to the salon earlier today and didn't need the extra wash. My stylist did a perfect job as always. My straight coffee brown hair was straightened and trimmed so that it falls sleekly around my shoulders with a quick brush. I apply my makeup as fast as I can, as it is nearly time for the car to arrive. My makeup is bolder than what I usually wear to the office. I drew a cat eye to make my ordinary brown eyes pop. I even added glitter to my eyeshadow. I love the overall effect and how my eyes appear more interesting. Turning to the dress I'd laid very carefully across my bed; I can’t help but smile sheepishly. It had taken two months of saving half of my paycheck to get this. It is worth every penny. The dress is a David Koma creation that features a corset bodysuit with a netted emerald skirt. I fell in love with the dress the moment I laid eyes on it. Picking up the dress reverently, I begin to put it on like I had been instructed; careful not to tear it. Once I'm in it, I rush again to my tall mirror and look myself over. Blinking at the sudden transformation. I look like someone who could pull off millionaire status one day. Heck, I think I could even dream bigger and maybe even pull off billionaire status. I look expensive as hell. For someone whose self-esteem takes an occasional nosedive, that's really something. Suddenly, a horn is blaring from outside and I hurriedly grab my shoes. I’m wearing a fashionable metallic strappy heel that complements the dress, and a simple clutch purse to go with it. The second horn sounds the moment I push the door open. I am reminded of the first date I went on in college and how I'd thought that I was going to marry my first boyfriend, Joe. Now isn't the time to think about past boyfriends, first dates, and naive hopes. I hurry toward the spotless limousine, swallowing a ball of nerves when I catch sight of Aaron's driver already out and holding the door open. “Good evening, Tomas.” I greet the middle-aged man with a smile. Tomas' eyes run over my form but do not linger. “You look really nice, Miss Baylor.” “Wow, thank you, Tomas,” I answer with a grin as I slide into the car to find it empty. When Tomas takes the wheel again, I lean forward to ask. “Where's Mr. Bennet?” “Oh. We’ll be picking him up now. He had instructed that I pick you up first.” I lean back against the seat as I give a nod. It is very typical of Aaron to do this. Why wouldn't he? He's the boss after all. He wasn't going to be waiting with Tomas for me like this is a date of some sort. It is past 7 p.m. and the traffic isn't terrible. Tomas glides down the highway as I look out the window. I watch as the normal-looking bungalows speed by and become nonexistent. We drive past fields and into a more upscale area with bigger houses. The more Tomas drives toward Aaron's home, the bigger the houses become until it's not just penthouses we speed by, but townhouses and of course mini-mansions. When Tomas finally glides into a highly fenced home, I take a deep breath and prepare
