Hodel KAT The argument was loud, louder than any I’d ever heard them have before. As it went on and on, rising and falling in violence, I sat with my legs curled up under me on the bed and leaned into Jake, who mirrored my position. We didn’t need to say anything—we knew what this argument meant. Words like ‘divorce’ and ‘I hate you’ and the sound of pots crashing screamed out that we would be shipped off to another home. It would be yet another place where we couldn’t trust anyone—another place where monsters came in the form of other people and not some harmless blue, furry creatures that snuck out of the closet at night like in the stories my mom used to tell me. Jake laid his hand on the bed between us, palm upward and fingers spread, and I took the invite, laying my hand on top of his. “Do you think they’ll send us to separate homes?” I asked, not really wanting an answer and fearing that he would confirm my suspicions. Lifting my head from his shoulder, I stared into the green eyes that always reminded me of spring grass. They were so bright, standing out against his dark hair and fair skin. He was the cutest boy I’d ever seen, but he was my best friend. He was my only friend. Jake was the only person I trusted in this entire world, and I didn’t want to be forced to leave him. Jake stared into my eyes and didn’t say anything for the longest time. His hand gently squeezed mine before he lifted a shoulder and let it drop. “It don’t matter. I’ll look for you, and everything will still be like normal, just with two homes to choose from to hang out.” “I think you’re trying to make me feel better,” I mumbled before laying my cheek on my knees. “I don’t have that kind of luck.” “We don’t need luck. We will make a pact right now that we will always look for one another. No matter what happens, we will find one another again,” he said. I could hear the quiet sincerity in his voice. Jake straightened his legs, which were way longer than my own even though he was only a year and a half older. Following his lead, I did the same, giggling as I wiggled my brightly colored toenails in front of me. The nail polish had been my birthday gift from Jake. I was pretty sure he’d stolen it, but I didn’t ask because I didn’t want to know. It was the nicest gift anyone had gotten me since before my parents died, and asking would’ve felt like ruining it. “You really like that polish, huh?” My smile as I looked over at him couldn’t have been any wider. His answering smirk clued me in that I’d been staring at the dimple in his cheek, and I blushed, ducking my head to look back at my toes. “I love it. Now, wherever I am, I’ll have a rainbow with me.” “I kinda got you something else, too,” Jake
