I let go of Evan’s hand and stopped in the middle of the crosswalk to shake my head at him. "You are really not going to tell me how you got them?" We are serenaded by a car honking to move us along, and Evan grabs my hand to drag me across the road. I squeezed his hand. "Were they in evidence? Did you sneak them out?" "Wrong, guess again." Evan was enjoying this, and I hated to play his little game, but working out mysteries was what I should be good at. Look at the evidence, build a case, and put the suspect behind bars—or discover how the suspect got tickets to a show sold out for months. "All right, there was a big drug bust, and all your crooked cop friends snagged some of the coke and heroin for themselves, but you spotted the tickets, and you knew I would be far more impressed by that than a quick fix or high!" "I don’t hang around with crooked cops." "But you’re not denying that there are crooked cops?" Evan shook his head. "That’s a whole other conversation." "Just tell me," I whined. "I’m going to guess over and over, and when I’ve expended all of my guesses, you are going to reveal how you got them, and it is going to be an anticlimax, isn’t it?" We walked in silence for a few seconds as Evan thought about it. "Yeah, you’re probably right. Well, you are right about it being an anti-climax. The mayor gave them to the chief and he couldn’t go tonight, and it was offered to my boss’s boss, and she was busy, and my boss was busy, and I think the thirty people in line before me couldn’t use the tickets, so they landed on me. It’s trickle-down economics or something." "It wouldn’t hurt them to give out bonuses once in a while instead of dangling a pair of tickets that were free anyway. Yeah, that was a bit of an anti-climax. You should have lied and said you were involved in the drug bust. Way more exciting." Evan laughed. "Next time, I’ll do that. If there is a next time." My whole body suddenly tensed as I spotted the guy coming toward us. He was over six feet, though not as big as Evan, but he had a presence and a tattoo on his left temple. This was New York, almost every second person out at this time of night has some form of a tattoo on their face, but there was something different about this guy. He walked with a swagger. And his hand was partially inside his suit jacket, which again doesn’t mean much since half the guys walking around this city have a hand in their jacket or, more commonly, their pants. But I got something from this guy staring right at me as he approached. He wasn’t staring at Evan, who he might perceive as a threat late at night—there was no show of dominance or alpha behavior. I tried not to look him in the eye for fear of antagonizing him, but I kept my eyes on him in case he did pull a weapon. I felt my whole body shaking, and Evan tightened his grip and pushed me back a little so he was between the guy and me as we passed. The guy quickly tilted his head as if greeting me, and we passed without conflict. We walked a block before I let out the breath I was holding. Evan stopped us and took me by the shoulders. "Hey, are you okay?" "I just thought…." "The Genovia family?" "Yeah, I… it was the way he was looking at me. I thought he might… I don’t know. I’m being stupid." Evan shook his head gently and looked me
