Prologue The Prophecy of Schorl And so it is foretold that a princess of Hoom, a seeress with eyes of emerald who can walk between worlds, will bring freedom to our lands. She, the all-powerful Keeper of the Stone, will save us from untruth and destruction. With her infinite powers, she will bring light to the darkness, create peace where there is chaos, and banish fear from the Realms of Light with her great courage and love. And so it shall come to pass, according to Uraum’s Law. Chapter 1 Worlds Apart The door slammed shut and footsteps faded. A stifling silence crept into the room, stilling the turbulent air after the yelling and jostling and clattering of only a few moments before. Tallie threw herself down upon her bed. She screwed up her fists, hammering her pillow with pent up rage. Unperturbed by the girl's tears, the bright evening sunlight made the dusty air sparkle as it hit a battered old paint box, half hidden between folds of patchwork quilt. Tallie had rescued it from a pile of unwanted belongings on her gran’s kitchen table the day of the funeral. “You can take one thing,” her stepmother had said sternly, as she prepared a black bin-bag to receive the rejects. All that remained of Gran’s life lay heaped up on the little old table, ready to be swept away: a pair of wire-rimmed spectacles peeping from their hand-embroidered case; dog-eared copies of ‘The Reader’s Digest’; a coaster set embossed with mother-of-pearl-dragonflies; some copper coloured pennies that Tallie did not recognise; knitting needles poking through a big ball of tawny-coloured wool; two white cotton handkerchiefs, lace bordered, with the initials D.T.H. neatly stitched in one corner; and a figurine – a laughing girl with long golden hair and a swirling red gown and a bluebird clasped between slender porcelain fingers. Tallie’s hand had hovered over the pretty little statuette for a moment until she spied beneath the handkerchiefs
