CHAPTER 1 Triton Loneliness for most comes in the darkness. A time when senses are heightened and even if people aren’t far, they seem miles away. A place where shadows are monsters and creaks are the footsteps of your worst nightmare. Darkness is something most people fear, but for me, it’s the place I feel most comfortable. At least it’s been that way for most of my life. There was a short period of time when I lived in the light. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hide away. I’m not a caveman. I love going outside, walking the beach, surfing, sailing, swimming, all of it. But in the light of day, when there are hundreds of people around me, laughing, chatting, talking, that’s when I feel the most alone. I know that’s crazy to say and to admit, but I’m at the point in life where there’s no point in hiding who I am. I am Triton, Son of Poseidon, God of the Sea. One of them, at least, since there are a few. It’s nothing but a title, really, but a pretty badass one I take pride in. Though, the way I chose to live my life is much different than most would guess. I don’t spend it under the sea, and I don’t spend it sailing it either. I spend it guarding my lighthouse, ensuring ships make it home safely whenever they need the help. A job I find to be rather rewarding. It’s much better than sitting in a golden palace and having people wait on me hand and foot. Some people enjoy that lifestyle, but not me. I like getting my hands dirty, like putting in work, and I really like knowing I’m making a difference to people. Especially when it comes to love. Gods, I am such a sucker for love. And that’s what tends to get me into the most trouble. Which leads me full circle to why I feel so damn alone all the time. I’ve erected some sturdy walls around myself. Walls so hard that even Hercules himself couldn’t break them down, and even though I talk to plenty of people, I don’t actually let them in. Not the real ones, that is, because with the darkness brings the spirits of those lost at sea. A gift I was given from the Gods. For what reason, I’m not sure. I’ve never had an answer and I’m not sure I’ll ever get one. There is nothing I can do for them and nothing they can do for me. So why have I been given this gift to speak to the spirits? Maybe it’s just having an ear to listen? For them and me? A way to balance the loneliness, keeping it at a steady point we can tolerate that won’t send us over the edge and into madness? Dare I call them my friends? No, of course not. I wouldn’t go that far because that would make me crazy. Wouldn’t it? A loud bark has me turning my attention towards the living room area. “Beluga!” I call, knowing that damn dog must have spotted another seagull. He’s the friendliest dog you’ll meet, the worst you’ll get from him is slobber. I mean, he may knock you over with his boulder-sized paws, but only because he wants a hug. For some reason, though, those damn seagulls really get him worked up. Sometimes I wonder if they aren’t taunting him... getting him riled up
