Life is about creating yourself. GEORGE BERNARD SHAW Prologue “Please,” she begs. The witch turns her head to the side but does not take her gaze from Maeva. She is focused on her, watching her, taking her in. There is deafening silence as both women sit across from one another, and yet neither speaks. Maeva has made her plea and awaits her answer. “There are consequences to changing the universe and opening parallel worlds. You realize this?” Cadence Devonshire asks. Maeva hesitates before she answers. Thoughts of what could be flash through her mind, but what is even more powerful are the thoughts of what will actually be if she stays here. It matters not the consequences. If she slips inside of that glass boat, if she allows the future to unfold the way it is designed for her—destined. This is not what she wishes for herself. This is not what she can bear. It is too much for any one person. It is too much for her. She would not survive it. “I cannot stay here. I will not be party to what is expected—nay, demanded of me.” Cadence watches her for a moment. She can see the trepidation in Maeva’s gaze and knows that she is indeed terrified. It is not just because she wants to have her freedom. It is because she is actually scared. The stench of fear wafts off her in waves, and yet she knows that Maeva does not understand the true power of her demands. For if Maeva did, she would not ask this of her. “Please,” Maeva whispers again, this time sounding much more desperate. Cadence closes her eyes for a brief moment before she watches her, and judging by the expression Maeva now wears, her eyes having turned to liquid, she is telling the truth. “This is your last chance, Maeva. Once this is done, it cannot be undone. And once the fates have shifted, there is no going back. There is no changing it. I do not have the powers to do that. You understand this, and you accept this for yourself and for your country?” Maeva doesn’t even have to think about it. She knows she will not be stripped naked in that glass boat and taken in front of the entire kingdom so they can watch her bleed. So that they, the kingdom, can be assured that she is pure.
