Aftertalk Other works by Leann Belle: Content Warnings While there are many moments of fun and spice in this story, this is a DARK work of fiction. I should have blocked him just so I’d stop seeing his face on my feed, but I was still bitter about how it all ended. So many years of my life wasted. Maybe it would have been easier if I had been the one to dump him, but no. When I found out he’d been two-timing me with my best friend for five of our nine goddamn years together, he had the audacity to officially dump me, like I was the problem. I didn’t even get the satisfaction of a screaming match and a “burn in hell,” and I would not be getting over that any time soon. And then my ex-best friend had the gall to ask me to be her bridesmaid, when he’d been telling me he wasn’t interested in marriage for our whole relationship. Amazing how a wedding sounds great all of a sudden when it’s not with me. God, now I’m just getting myself riled up again. Fuck you, Daniel. Fuck you, Clara. And fuck your cursed, tainted wedding. “I thought that was why we were here, Alice.” Dinah, my dear sister, interrupted my self and non-self loathing with a roll of her eyes in my general direction. The purple rotating lights caught in her pretty blue irises as she shot me a look of pure disappointment and frustration. “You were so adamant on coming out tonight, and yet you’ve spent the whole evening on your phone, staring at that jackass and your ex-best-home wrecker. You didn’t even notice when hot guy number one offered to buy you a drink.” She motioned with her chin toward a total chad, dressed in a half open button up and jeans that were too tight for any man to reasonably wear in public. I could tell from here that he wasn’t packing much. “Or when hot guy number two asked you to dance.” Her next target was a dark haired douche with more hair gel than rhythm grinding against some little curly haired girl on the dance floor. “Yeah, I’m so sad I missed out.” I shook my head before returning to my tequila sunrise. I needed something bright and sunny in the darkness that was my life lately, and the orange juice and grenadine was the only thing that seemed to be picking up my spirits. “Look, I’m not saying these guys are marriage material, but you’re in your thirties now and completely antisocial. It’s not the same as when you were last single and twenty-one. You might have to readjust your expectations a bit.” “I’m thirty. I’m not ancient.” I mumbled into my straw. “That’s ancient when you’re at a club trying to get laid.” Dinah corrected. She was twenty-five, a full five years my junior, yet she acted about fifteen years younger than me half the time. Not that she was wrong though. But I’d been with Daniel so long, I barely even knew who I was outside of a relationship. I’d built my entire adult life around him and the eternity I thought we were going to spend together. My hobbies, my friendships, my routines. It had only been a few months since it all went south. Well, I guess technically it had been five years since it went south on his side, but it still felt fresh to me. I just wished he could have told me that when he got “caught up at work” and missed a couple of my birthdays, that it was because he was caught up in Clara’s vagina. I could have started over when I was still younger and more desirable to guys like… I glanced at Chad and Hair Gel… Maybe the issue was just that I was legitimately over club life, and not that I was undesirable at all. I met my ex at a club, and we’d been all over the night life for half our relationship, before we both felt like we’d grown out of it. At least I felt like that. Maybe he only pretended to. Maybe that’s why this made me more bitter than excited for new possibilities. I didn’t want to meet another Daniel, after all. Feeling even more down, I excused myself to the bathroom, where the annoying, thudding techno-rap-auto-tuned-whatever was somewhat muted by the thick walls. I shoved open the door and made no eye contact with the woman getting railed on the sink as I located an open stall. She seemed to be having far too good a time to
