We’re going to be late!” I shift my face back into the hotel pillow, ignoring the whims and whines of my best friend, Leah. She’s never been this anxious to get up early in the morning, but it’s our final spring break. We graduate college in three months. She knocks on my door one more time before somehow picking the lock open in our suite. “Hey, Eden! You have to get up. The Tiki party on the beach has already started, and I want to get good seats near the bar!” I roll my eyes and play dead, anything to get another hour or two of peace. Leah doesn’t care about that and pulls my blankets off, throwing them on the floor nearby like a needy child. My body groans as I finally surrender and sit up. My vision is tired and hazy. “I think I’m still drunk from last night,” I admit, shaking my head. “I told you I don’t do well with tequila. Why was that the only drink you brought me at the club?” She flicks her blonde hair over her exposed shoulder while wearing a skimpy pink bikini. “Because you needed to let loose. The week is almost over, and you’ve only gotten drunk once. The best way to cure a hangover is to have another drink, so get something sexy on for the tiki party, and let’s go!” She races out of the room with so much energy that I don’t know if I have the patience to keep up with her today. We were matched as roommates in freshman year, and it worked out so well that we stayed roommates through college. But she’s the exact opposite of me. Leah dragged me to Atlantic City this week, and I’m not ready to go drink more alcohol under the scorching sun. The beach is gorgeous, and the water is crisp. It might not be so bad. Changing out of my pajamas and into a swimsuit, I turn around in the mirror of my bathroom. The white swimsuit stands out against my pale, lightly sun-kissed body. My hair is a unique shade of strawberry blond and scarlet in shade, the curls from last night now soft and subtle waves. I still have a bit of mascara leftover from last night, so I leave it at that, slipping on some cute flip-flops before meeting Leah in the living room. She gives me a hesitant look. “You’re missing something.” “What could that be?” I ask, confused. She scampers off to her bedroom and comes back with a pair of heels and a knotted string of crystals that might be a necklace. I can’t be sure. She makes me change into the short white heels that match my simple bikini and then ties my midsection with the string of clear crystals. Leah hooks them around my neck, and I run my fingertips against the chain, seeing it crisscross against my abdomen and chest, purposefully pressed over the curve of my breasts. It’s beautiful and certainly fitting for my swimsuit’s white, classy look, but I don’t know why she’s wasting her time. “There, all better,” she says, gleaming. I play with the crystals a little, feeling like a runway model trying to show off her assets. “Leah, why don’t you wear this instead? It’s not really my style, and it would look great on you.” She pouts. “Eden, you look amazing. Don’t start with me, okay? You look so hot, and I just want you to have a good time, maybe meet a handsome man...” I shut down that idea right away. “No, I’m not here for boys, Leah. We went over this.” “You broke up with Tyler three weeks ago. It’s time to move on.”
