You are a queen my dear, never allow a man to tell you differently." -N.OWENS Prologue AZZIE- Age 15 The final school bell rings and I’m the last one out of my seat. I hate going home but I equally hate school. As I’m walking out of the classroom door, Amber stops me. “Hey Azzie, do you want to meet up tomorrow to work on our science project?” Oh yeah, I forgot I had to have a partner for this stupid project. “Ummm, sure. Wanna meet at the library during lunch? I'm grounded and can’t do anything after school?” Lie but since Frank won’t let me have friends or leave the house ever, lunchtime will have to do. “Lunch works, see you tomorrow.” Amber waves and takes off down the hall to her locker. I head to mine and grab the books I need for homework tonight. If I’m lucky I’ll make it home and Frank will be drunk off his ass and passed out already. Then I can get the chores done in peace. Once I’m out the front doors of school I make my way towards my bike. It’s about a 15-minute ride home or a 30-minute walk. I would walk every day just for the peace and quiet that the 30 minutes would give me but if I don’t get home fast enough, I’ll get the belt to my back again because Frank will think I’m out with boys or something. As if anyone would be attracted to me not after what I’ve been through the last few years. As I walk up my porch steps, I try to calm my rapidly beating heart. This is always the worst part of my day. Coming home to my dad. If he's not drunk off his ass he finds something wrong that I did to punish me. There’s a plate in the sink, a slap to the face. There’s no food in the fridge, a punch to the stomach. I stepped on a squeaky floorboard, a belt to my back. Frank, because I refuse to call him dad, which he seems fine with, isn’t winning any father of the year awards. My mom was a junkie who overdosed when I was barely a few days old. I don’t even have pictures of her, but he says it’s my fault his life turned out this way and that he is just biding his time. For what, I don’t know but 3 more years and I’m gone. Today must be my lucky day. Frank is passed out on the couch watching some soap opera. Only 1,096 days till I’m completely free of this monster. 3 years and 1 day, because at midnight I turn 15 and I’ll be one day closer to freedom.
