At first it seems like a senseless tragedy. An accident. Carver can't help but investigate. When he does, he realizes this was no ordinary woman. She was a trained killer. And she was looking for him. There's a contract on Carver's head. But who's behind it? The Brazilians? His former government unit, Scion? The military company, Breakstone?Running isn't an option. If they tracked him to his new city, they can track him anywhere. Some problems are best met head on. Especially when the prey is a trained killer himself. The game becomes survival of the fittest. But it doesn't matter how many assassins Carver kills if he can't find out who's funding them. It's a simple numbers game. They'll keep coming. Carver will get tired and eventually slip up. Then a bullet or a blade will put him six feet under.Carver will have to stay in the shadows. Strike when he can. Find allies if possible. Follow the trail of money and bodies to the top.And cut the head off the snake. Chapter 1SATURDAY NIGHT A body hurtled groundward. It slammed into a dumpster in an alley. A club entrance was just around the corner. The twenty-somethings waiting to go inside shouted in unison when the dumpster rang like a gong. Some jumped. Others scattered like frightened deer.Carver was also just around the corner. He wasn't going into the club. He was a bouncer. He'd been working at Club Periclean for a few months. He'd broken up fights. Dragged out drunks. Strongarmed troublemakers. But he hadn't heard a ruckus like this before. His first instinct was to take cover. He didn't jump. Didn't shout. But he did back up a few steps behind the safety of a concrete wall. A moment later he registered two things. One: The sound wasn't a gunshot. Two: It came from the alley. He walked around the corner into the alley. The streetlamp highlighted a horror scene. He saw blood. Saw an arm dangling over the side of the dumpster. Carver jogged over. Looked inside. Saw a crumpled body. The clothing was casual. Jeans and a t-shirt. The face was a bloody mess, but the long, blond hair hinted at a woman. The bone structure in the face confirmed it. Even with all the blood he could tell she was young. Maybe early thirties. She didn't have a purse. A phone. Nothing that Carver could see, anyway. No bulges in the jean pockets. Nothing near her hand. It was possible she'd been holding a phone. If she had, it was somewhere in the dumpster. Probably smashed to pieces.Carver looked up. The club was in the bottom of La Playa, a high-rise condominium. This one was thirty stories tall. She could have fallen from anywhere. The roof. Maybe the single illuminated balcony about twenty stories up. It was hard to say. It was nearly one in the morning on a Saturday. Most condo residents were probably asleep. Some of the people waiting in line wandered around the corner. Cell phones recorded. Gasps of disbelief. Cries of horror. One girl bent over and threw up."Holy shit. What happened?" A guy rushed over and looked inside the dumpster. He reeled back. Stumbled. Probably
