Chapter One Sarena Snowflakes fell on my eyelashes as I hustled down Madison Avenue, fifteen minutes late for my interview with Mr. Fancy Pants Lawyer. I hadn’t bothered to do an internet search on my new employer—I was lucky Devlynn hooked me up with a job. I was fresh out of my second year at NYU and desperately needed to earn money to complete my degree. Mom had offered to mortgage the house, and my sister-in-law said she’d flip the bill, but I didn’t want anyone’s help. I wanted to stand on my own two feet. “Shit!” The edge of my heeled boot hit a patch of icy sidewalk as I reached the high-rise entrance. My feet slipped from under me, and I braced myself for a fall. “Easy there, Twinkle Toes,” a thick voice boomed in my ear as strong arms circled my waist. Rough hands settled me firmly back on my feet as my heart galloped from my near-death fall. “Thank you,” I said, lifting my gaze to the elegant facade of the Carlyle Hotel. “I’m late for an interview. I’ve probably blown my chance of being hired.” I ran my palms down my clothes to ensure everything looked neat before I glanced up, and my jaw figuratively dropped on the floor. The man was the love child of Chris Hemsworth and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. He wore a three-piece designer suit, and dark ink peeked from his crisp shirt collar. Tattoos. Maybe he was an investment banker by day and a tortured musician by night. “Sebastian Vaughn, Attorney at Law.” His name caught my attention. “Sarena Brooks? I’ve been waiting for you.” My blood ran cold. He wasn’t a day trader. He was a lawyer. And my potential employer. “Oh.” I swallowed the lump of lead lodged in my throat. “Hi. Yes, I’m Sarena.” His eyes narrowed shrewdly on mine. I licked my lips, uncomfortable under his intense gaze. He was pissed, and I almost offered to let him spank me if it would make it all better. “I don’t have time to be stood up,” he finally uttered, breaking my gaze. “I usually don't wait longer than five minutes. If you can’t be prompt, you’re not the person for me.” “I-I—” I stuttered, tears forming in my eyes. “But I need this job.” “You could have fooled me.” “But a construction crew had half the sidewalk along 76th Street torn up. I had to detour a few blocks to get here. I… I’m sorry for wasting your time.” He gnashed his teeth. His eyes flicked to the hotel entrance over my shoulder and back to me. “I can only give you ten minutes. I have a meeting back at my office at two.” He still sounded exasperated, and the soft frown lines beside his eyes conveyed his frustration. “Don’t make this a habit. Most people in this city won’t look at you twice if you’re late.” The desire to tell this asshole where to go was strong, but the need for money trumped my smart mouth. I gritted my teeth and gave him my sweetest smile, one I knew all these older, powerful men liked. “Oh, my God, thank you so much, Mr. Vaughn. I can’t tell you what it means to me.” “Don’t thank me yet. I haven’t given you the job.” He assessed me silently, his eyes roaming up and down my form for a moment before he placed a hand at my elbow. He gestured me through the elegant, canopied doors, nodding to the doorman as we passed. “I don’t imagine you’ll mind if we take this meeting to the bar, considering you’re so late.” “Of course not.” I shrank under his stern gaze. His fingers hovering at my elbow sent chills through me. “Sit,” he ordered. I nodded, feeling like my every movement was under his scrutiny. “I’m great with kids.
