Forbidden Wolf Daddy Chapter 1 Marley A year ago, if someone had told me I’d be working at a school filled with shifters, I would have said they were crazy. Yet, here I was, sitting in a beachside bungalow owned by a shifter, wincing in the pre-dawn light over a seating chart for two dozen five-year-olds who were about to start their school career in Miss Cage’s kindergarten class at the Polar Shift Academy. That’s me. I’m Miss Cage. I didn’t have anything against shifters. I wasn’t prejudiced against the part of the community that could shift between a lupine form and a human one. In fact, I’d dated one of them for a while. But that whole thing… it hadn’t ended well. And it almost ruined my whole life. I rubbed at the ache in my neck. I’d spent so much of the week sitting at the breakfast bar in the kitchen, hunched over student files, curriculum paperwork, and flashcards with each student’s name on one side and whether they were shifters or not on the other side. It was still surreal to be starting a job at a prestigious institution like Polar Shift. A school that fully integrated the lycan and human populations in a way that didn’t alienate either population would have been absolutely unheard of in a place like Leighton Valley, Pennsylvania. My upbringing in Leighton Valley had been pretty idyllic, but things took a dark twist when lycan folk came out of the “clawset” (I know—cute? Right?). I’d always thought my hometown was pretty progressive. My neighbors were generally kind and generous, but they showed their true colors when lycans started revealing themselves. Some of them were newcomers; some of them had lived among us for years. It made no difference to the people of Leighton Valley how new or old they were, though. Almost every single one of them was run straight out of town. It was an injustice that was easy to be complacent about when it wasn’t staring you directly in the face, and for a long time, I didn’t have to deal with the repercussions of the hatred toward them directly. But all of that changed when I met Wyatt Pierce. I was a few years out of high school, and Wyatt was older, charismatic, and charming. He was the first guy who’d ever really taken a true interest in me. Having such a powerful man, a powerful creature, desire me was almost like a drug. The laws allowing shifters and humans to be together had just passed through the Supreme Court in DC, and sparks flew between us as we fell hard and fast into love with each other. We kept the fact that he was a shifter a secret, which added to the allure of the relationship. Looking back, I think I was so used to being “Little Miss Perfect” that I wanted to live life a little more dangerously. I liked feeling like I was doing something my friends wouldn’t approve of, and Wyatt encouraged that side of me. But being a shifter made all the normal relationship stuff that much crazier—at least, that’s what Wyatt always told me. Things were amazing for a few years—years I’d spent obsessed with him and wanting nothing but to marry him and pop out a litter of pups, start our family pack, and be the perfect stay-at-home mate. I started to get hobbies and hang out with other people. I’d felt so comfortable and confident in my relationship with Wyatt, I never thought it would be a problem. But I’d learned pretty quickly that Wyatt was jealous and possessive. Pain skewered through my temple and settled behind my eyes. I needed to stop thinking about this, or it would throw me. I couldn’t put on a cheerful face to teach kids the alphabet and the seasons if I was sulking about my ex. I checked my phone to see how long I had before I needed to get dressed and get on the road to POSHA—the Polar Shift Academy. It was only five-thirty, and with the academy’s very progressive start time of nine in the morning, I’d have plenty of time to kill. With so much pent-up, nervous energy in me, I decided to take a quick run through town. Running would help me get some of the nervous energy from starting my new job out of my system and would have the added benefit of loosening up all the tight muscles in my neck and shoulders before I had to spend the day running around and chasing children. Sliding off the velvety seat cushion, I left my seating chart and files on the kitchen counter and walked back to my room to change. It still threw me for a loop every time I walked into the bedroom of the quaint beach house. Looking out the huge windows and seeing the shoreline only a short walk away never got old, nor did falling asleep to the sound of the crashing waves each night and watching the sun peek up over the pinks and purples of the horizon. I could never have afforded this by myself. It’s not like kindergarten teachers make six-figure salaries (though I think we all should, thanks very much.) The only way I could live in such a perfect place was thanks to an unlikely run-in with a lycan who helped me get back on my feet when my life had all but
