For more detailed content warnings, please visit my website. PROLOGUE Angel Ten years ago Time stops. Freezes. Ceases. So does the beat of my heart. The breath in my lungs. The sparking of my nerves. Time stops and when it starts once more, nothing is the same. My mind takes several long minutes to start churning again, to compute what I’m seeing. Like my brain doesn’t want to believe. Like it can’t. Like it’s trying to reject the very truth presented before my eyes. Because it can’t be true, can it? Not my girl? Celia. Not my brother? Axel. Not together. But it is true. It’s plain to see. There outside the door of his apartment. He’s kissing her. My brother is kissing my girl. She balances on the tips of her toes, lips moving against his, palms resting on his chest. His hand is tight on her elbow, his mouth pressed to hers. The truth of it is there. Plain as day. Plain for everyone to see. Everyone, including me. My heart cracks. Right down the middle. The pain so intense, I huddle over my knees and try not to hurl. The two people I love the most in the world. Behind my back. Betraying me. How? How could they do it? I dry heave right there on the sidewalk outside his apartment block, and as the last violent retch wracks through my body, the pain ceases. In its place rampages rage; red hot and raw. I jolt upright, tipping my head back to peer up at the balcony that runs around the apartment doors. They’re a pace apart now. Axel’s talking to her. I can’t see his face or hers. She takes a step towards him and he takes one away. She laughs, and he shakes his head. Then she’s spinning around and walking away. I watch her disappear into the stairwell, observe as Axel watches her go, his hand scraping through the dark hair on his head. Does he feel any guilt? Any shame? Any reproach? Does he feel anything at all? No. He doesn’t. It’s always been this way. Always the same. He could never stand for me to have anything of my own. He could never bear for me to have something he didn’t. He could never let that be. He always had to take it. He always had to break it. I shouldn’t even be surprised. I hear the click of her heels on the stairs, and I step into the shadows, my fists tight balls, my nails cutting deep into my palms. I watch her trot along the pathway, hips swaying, and climb into her car. Her figure once had my blood pumping; now it runs cold in my veins. Fuck, I liked that girl a lot. Fuck, I thought she was the one. Fuck, how could I get this so wrong? I laugh bitterly to myself as she melts into the shadows. Because there’s cruel irony to this. It’s why I’m here after all. To discuss it with my good old brother. I shake my head and step back out into the lamplight. Axel’s door is closed now. But I don’t give a shit. I still have a word or two to say to my elder brother. I climb the stairs slowly, each footstep growing heavier and heavier, weightier and weightier, as the anger inside me grows bolder and bolder, hotter and hotter until it’s steaming through my veins. I’m going to fucking kill him. I’m going to hurt him like he’s hurt me. The image of them hangs in front of my eyes. Taunting me as I climb the stairs. Other images too. Of them twined together, of him rutting her hard, of her taking his knot. Of them laughing. Laughing at me. Shit! Shit! I pause at the top of the staircase, gazing along the row of apartment doors.
