No, can’t be!He froze. To the outside world, the location and presence of the most feared and infamous prison in China doesn’t exist. To those that do know of its existence, just outside Beijing, the separate grey brick-built prison buildings are surrounded by several high walls and electric fences. Foothills to the east rise up behind the entire complex. Multiple steel gates divide the cell blocks from the front gate, while the whole structure is hidden from the road by surrounding orchards, tall birch trees and farmland. After six years of solitary confinement in his tiny prison cell engulfed in the stench of sweat and human waste, Huang only ever heard screams or cries of people in distress after the constant beatings that went on daily. He had no idea who his fellow inmates were. The shrill yelling voices of the guards only used the names of either ‘spy,’ ‘traitor’ or the prisoner’s assigned number. No real names were ever used. All this to demean and depersonalise each one of them. Huang had succumbed after multiple beatings and constant starvation. Such was the shrouded secrecy of the notorious Qincheng jail.As the solid metal door slowly opened in the half light, Huang used his feet on the bedframe to push himself away from the sinister silhouette of a tall heavy-set man filling the doorway. He covered the top of his head in his hands and cowered as close as he could to the far wall of the cell in a foetal position.Oh God! Please! Please! No more questioning! As his eyes adjusted, the man entered the cell, leaned down towards him and put one finger in front of his mouth, making a low-pitched shushing sound. He raised his other hand and indicated for Huang to get up and follow him. Huang stiffened harder and tried to curl himself tighter into a ball, but the man continued to beckon him forward and signalled him to take hold of his hand.I don’t have a choice. In response, Huang stretched out his hand and
