Author Note Author note: This title contains sensitive and dark content and may be triggering for some readers. Please read with caution. If you do not have any triggers you can skip the next page (trigger page) to avoid any spoilers. triggers Rape: Secondary character (Listening, not seeing) Physical violence: (Not within the harem) Talk of child abuse: (in the past) Bipolar Disorder: I have worked closely with someone who—like a very special character in this book—has bipolar. They have helped me get this character's experience as close to accurate as possible. Like most mental illnesses, each person's experience is different, just like my character's situation is unique to him. The triggers are talk of self-harm/suicide and depression. Dedication This book is dedicated to those who are suffering in silence. When you are trapped in the darkness, and you feel like there is no way back into the light. Just remember. You are strong, you are important, and you are loved. Much love Lark x Contents 1. Chapter one Braylon 2. Chapter two Mia 3. Chapter three Damon 4. Chapter four Kane 5. Chapter five Cade 6. Acknowledgments Mental Health Helplines About Author Chapter one Braylon Why the fuck would Cade decide to take a run on Christmas morning in a State he doesn’t know shit about? “You’re sure this is the trail he would have taken?” I grit out, worry and frustration taking residence inside me the longer we are out here, and there’s no sign of Cade. “No. I’m not sure, but this is the only running trail near my house. It goes around in a circle, so whatever way he went, we should cover it,” Kane mutters. His face wears a frown, and the agitation in his tone is just as clear to hear as mine. We spend twenty minutes in a jog following the trail, only to come back around with nothing. My breathing is heavy and uneven as a misty cloud comes from my mouth with each exhale. It’s cold this morning, and I’m kicking myself for not grabbing a jacket before I left. “Fuck!” Kane shouts to the sky, making some wood pigeons shit themselves and fly out of the nearby trees. Suppressing the mounting fear, I start scanning the area, hands on my hips, breathless from the jog or the uncontrollable helplessness I feel. Maybe both. As I glance around, something on the road near the trail catches my eye, and I have to shield my eyes with my hand against the rising sun to get a better look. What is that? With hesitant footsteps, I make my way over to discover a cracked phone and AirPods on the ground. Ice-cold dread hits, and my heart seems to plummet into the pit of my stomach as I crouch down, picking up the phone. It’s cracked and dead, but I know it’s Cade’s. He had some phone cases made with his art designed on them. The design is unique, a face made up of branches with three birds perched on the head. This phone has that case, and something tells me he wouldn’t sell any of them. He also owns a pair of AirPods, so I know it’s not a coincidence. “Kane, I’ve found his phone.” I can hear the tremble in my voice. What the fuck happened to him? Kane strides over. His own exhale making a cloud in front of his face. “I couldn’t hear you. What is it?” Kane asks, catching his breath. His face visibly pales when his eyes land on the phone in my hand. “No,” he whispers, shaking his head, eyes flickering with fear as they widen. Swallowing hard, his eyes inspecting the rest of the ground. I watch as he draws his brows together into a frown. “Is that fucking blood?!” he exclaims, pointing to the area a meter up the road. Please let him be wrong. I think as I stand up and walk over to the dark mark on the road. “Shit,” I whisper to myself. Kane stands beside me, pain flashing across his face as we take in the blood painting the road. A lot of fucking blood. “We don’t know it’s Cade’s,” I tell him. Denial sets in. It could be anyone’s blood. Anything’s.Maybe a car hit a deer or something. The driver felt bad and took the carcass with them. That’s why there’s a short trail of blood and then nothing. That could be possible, right? “What are the fucking odds that it’s not?” Kane snaps back, voice trembling as he runs his hands through his dark hair, looking around as if Cade will magically pop out in front of us. “We need to call the cops,” he decides, fumbling through his jacket pocket and pulling out his phone. “They won’t do
