Every minute like sand in an hourglass, And each one identical to the next. I teach the science of time, Conveying a message of life wasted on a daily basis. To a bunch of morons. I didn’t think my sands of time could get any worse, Until Nicolas De Aragon wandered into my classroom. Nico I found a class called Horology, And when I learned it had nothing to do with sex, I was disappointed. The human race has bored me for millennia, And I really thought I stumbled upon a gem. Without a single lesson in blowjobs, I began to feel the boredom creep back in. Until Professor X opened his mouth to berate us all. Dedication When life gets bloody, make some Bloody Marys. Prologue Nico The tip of my cigarette burns a bright red as I stare through the smoke with squinted eyes. Cornell University is a prestigious, ivy league institution, geared toward molding perfect upper-crust humans. Surely the life skill of turning your nose up to the average middle class and lower is necessary to survive here in Ithaca, New York. I’m always looking for something new to cure my boredom. Roaming the Earth for thousands of years gets boring after a while, and I’m officially bored out of my fucking mind. I’d have an impressive resume if I were to ever put one together. I’ve studied every damn course in existence, I swear. Students all walk onto campus together, moaning and groaning about their futures and lectures as if the next few years of discipline are the worst torture they can think of, their youth being ruined. Some eye me as they walk past, some with interest, and some dismissing me instantly. I’m not a student, but I make it my mission to check out every university as I roll through each town, trying to find something to catch my attention. It’s been years with no luck, and I’m getting twitchy, which isn’t good for anyone’s health and safety. I take another drag of my cigarette, my heightened hearing picking up on a passing conversation between two students, drawing my attention. “Horology? That’s a stupid name for studying clocks. How the hell is there an entire class on clocks?” one snorts. “You’ll be bored out of your mind.” “Not just clocks. It’s the science behind measuring time, idiot,” his friend throws back. “It’s interesting.” “You’re such a nerd,” he snickers as they continue to walk toward the building, their voices slowly fading. I chuckle to myself, the class name holding my attention for a few moments as I consider it. I’ve studied all kinds of scientific shit over the years, but never Horology. If they hadn’t mentioned the clocks and time, I would have assumed it was a class for whores. I don’t need lessons on how to please or seduce someone. Even without the years of experience I’ve had, it’s also built into me. Vampires wouldn’t exist without seduction and pleasure. It’s our entire purpose, besides feeding. I absently drop the rest of my cigarette on the ground and put it out with the toe of my shoe, walking toward the administrative building without a second thought. It will take me two seconds to get into that class, hopefully satisfying something inside me before I snap. I push the heavy glass door open, my eyes landing on a petite woman with silky blonde hair. Last week I had someone like her for breakfast. I’m not interested in round two. Maybe I’ll indulge in a brunette next time? Her eyes glance up at me, giving me a slow once-over as I approach the desk. “May I help you?” I rest my elbows on the scratched wood surface, raising an eyebrow. “I’m bored. I want to join your little Horology class.” “Oh.” She frowns. “You’re a few months late. Applications closed months ago and classes began at the start of last month. We have openings for next semester?” I narrow my eyes, leaning closer to hold her gaze, dropping my voice as she becomes completely focused on me. “Put me in your Horology class. Now.” Her eyes glaze over, a relaxed smile tugging at her glossed lips. “Of course, sir. Name?” Mind control has been making my life a hell of a lot easier since I mastered it. I can get anything I want without argument. Like the fancy penthouse I don’t pay a cent for. I don’t understand why they want so much for it. There were nicer places in Greece for less. I didn’t pay for that either, though. I stayed for free until someone decided to do a welfare check on the owner after they hadn’t shown up to work for a week. What? I’d been hungry. “Nicolas De Aragon. You won’t be needing my address or anything,” I say lightly, waiting for her to type it into her computer system. “You’ll organize my textbooks, yes?” “Yes, Nicolas,” she agrees quickly, waiting for more instruction. “Actually, find me everything I’ll be needing. I seem to have misplaced
