And he’s my new boss. He tends to burn through personal assistants as fast as he does the fuel in his fancy cars. Nobody can manage him for more than a week before breaking down or sleeping with him or both, but he’s on the verge of signing for a major Hollywood trilogy, and it’s no surprise that the producer wants him to clean up his act. That’s where I come in, and there are huge benefits if I can do two things – keep the details of his life on track for the next two months and stay out of his bed. Should be easy, right? I’m so not his type. He likes his women meek and obedient, and I’m anything but. There’s no way he’s luring me anywhere. My impending move to Australia is about to get financed AF, and my fave charity will also get a mega-donation before I leave, so I’ll definitely take a shot at wrangling Mr. Hotness. I just have to keep my head on straight, stay immune to his oddly vulnerable charm and puppy-dog eyes, ignore his zero-filter snark, and reply NO to every wayward suggestion he makes — no matter how much he makes me start wanting to say yes. Boss in the Spotlight is a standalone romance with an HEA. While it's part of a series, each book is about a different couple and can be read on its own. Author’s Note: This book is set in New Zealand, and follows British English spelling and usage. Chapter One Sage Weirdest job interview ever. I was at my older sister’s housewarming party, enjoying a champagne cocktail and trying to decide which yummy canapé to have next, when she caught my hand. “I need to talk to you,” said Mel. Her eyes sparkled with happiness, and her face was alight with a smile, so I knew there wasn’t a problem. “Sure. What’s up?” “Grant has a job offer for you. You’re the perfect person for it.” “Um… okay? You want to tell me about it now?” The waiter closest to me held a tray of tiny Yorkshire puddings, each topped with a sliver of roast beef and shaved horseradish. I’d had two already, and having a third was definitely an option. This party was like none I’d been to before. For the last three years, parties revolved around beer and cheap sausages on the barbecue—such was the life of a university student—not hired wait staff and a barman dedicated to making cocktails. Mel’s partner, Grant, was one of New Zealand’s young billionaires, and they’d recently moved into this apartment. “Come with me,” said Mel. She tugged my hand and led me out of the enormous lounge and into Grant’s home office. Another huge room. She closed the door behind her, and the music and chatter immediately dulled to a low hum. Grant leaned against the window, hands in his pockets. “Hi, Sage. Did Mel explain?” Mel pulled a face. “I said you had a job offer.” I loved my sister and only slightly hero-worshipped her partner, but I held onto my independence. “I already have a job until I leave for Europe.” “Yeah, on minimum wage,” said Mel. “How are you going to save up for backpacking on that?” “The same way everyone else does.” “Instead of doing a basic data-entry job,” said Grant, “how about something where you get to stretch your skills? I know someone who needs a personal assistant urgently. Their current one left at short notice. He’s only in the country for a few months, so the timing would be perfect.” Grant headed a multinational tech company, and Mel had made noises about him finding me a temporary job there. I’d refused. I wanted to make my own way in life. “This isn’t working for Price Industries?” I asked. Grant shook his head. “No. And not any of my subsidiaries, either. Are you interested?” “Why me?” “He has a reputation for being difficult to handle,” said Grant. “You’re a tough cookie, and like your sister”—he smiled at Mel—“you don’t take any shit. I’m confident that, if he was an asshole to you, you’d put him in his place.” Mel snuggled up next to
