The sneer came from behind Amber as she sauntered into the kitchen to grab a drink from the fridge. She hadn't even said anything and already she had become a target. It was as if she was made one merely by existing, as if the marvelous Miles Ryan had nothing better to do than be a thorn in her paw. He and her brother had been sitting at the breakfast bar in the demon wolf compound, going over whatever homework Travers the alpha had given them. Not stupid human homework like Mathematics or even Science, but demon wolf homework like how to raise a portal to hell or even how to cause an insane amount of pain without actually killing a victim. Amber didn't need the homework, she'd been on the other end of that torture for long enough already and she wasn't even a fully-grown demon wolf yet. Even by human terms she was young, barely a teenager. She heard her brother sucking in a breath as if to respond, but she could not bring herself to hear whatever stupid excuse he had. Pulling down the long sleeve of her black t-shirt to hide the most recent burns left by their overbearing, sexually assaulting alpha, she whipped around and growled, "It's none of your damn business, Ryan." Though she had long since learned to take care of herself, mainly by keeping her mouth shut and merely enduring whatever was thrown at her, Miles Ryan was one wolf she wouldn't sit quiet and be pretty for. He was a bully and an idiot, and the only reason she put up with him at all was the fact that he was her elder brother's best friend. That and the fact Daemon and Miles were the only two males in the entire pack who had never tried to lay hands on her physically. And that counted for something, even if the latter was an asshole. "What's the matter, Sparkles? Who shit on your steak this morning?" Miles asked, glowering at her with striking green eyes, the kind that had many of the other young she-wolves in the pack swooning. Not Amber, she loathed him with every fiber of her being, just like she did the rest of them. Maybe in the human world, her good looks might have made her popular and successful, but here in the demon werewolf community they just made her a target, even earning her the nickname Sparkles from Miles. To some that might have been endearing, but to her, it just made her cringe. And to think that his bullying of her made her a target for the jealous she-bitches who thought that was how werewolves showed their affection, well, that just made her feel sick to her stomach. Miles' mention of food, even with shit on it, made her stomach growl, and she suddenly remembered that she hadn't eaten anything all day. One glance at the clock hanging above the door of the industrial kitchen told her that it was midafternoon and high time she ate. But that would involve staying in the same room as him, and that she wasn't prepared to do. Besides, it wouldn't be too much longer before the eldest she-wolves came to shoo them from the kitchen so that they could prepare dinner for everyone. Likely she'd be roped into helping while her brother and his best friend hurried off to have whatever fun it was that they usually had while she was stuck in servitude to the pack. One day I'll get out of here, she thought grimly, though it was a vain hope. Never had a single wolf escaped Travers' demon pack, at least not without dying and returning to the fiery pits of hell from which their very race had been created thanks to the witches of New York. "Sounds like you could do with a snack," Miles smirked at her, tapping his pencil on the breakfast bar just to infuriate her more. "Make us something, would you, Sparkles?" Amber growled deep in her throat. Her hands tightened into fists, one almost popping the soda can she held in it. She was about to offer an angry retort when the sound of someone clearing their throat alerted them all to someone standing in the doorway. "Daemon, alpha wants to see you," the man, one of Travers’ lapdogs who usually came to collect her to take her into the alpha's bed, announced. Amber wanted to feel relief that he hadn't come to collect her, but instead, all she felt was dread, wondering what he could possibly want with her brother. "Let's not keep him waiting." Daemon got up from his stool with a grunt, already standing just as tall as the guy who was twice
