Simon McCleave was originally born in South London. When leaving University, he worked in television and film development. He worked on films such as 'The Full Monty' and television series such as the BBC Crime Drama 'Between The Lines'. Simon then became a script writer for television and film. He wrote on series such as Silent Witness, Murder In Suburbia, Teachers, Attachments, The Bill, Eastenders and many more. He had tried various other flavours – mint, bubblegum and even coffee – but this was his favourite. Sitting quietly in the tatty, overgrown garden of a flat that he lived in in Denbigh, North Wales, he watched as a small bird landed on a rusty garden table nearby. It had a rust-coloured body, with white and black wings. Carmel thought it was a chaffinch. He remembered seeing one being attacked and killed by two crows when he was a child. Its screeches still haunted him. Carmel was 21 years old and until three months ago lived in Borivali, a suburb at the north-west end of Mumbai. With a large Gujarati population, Borivali was relatively affluent compared to the slums of Dharavi in the south. Carmel and his 15-year-old brother had lived in a small two-bedroomed house with their mother, Nitira, who was a teacher at the local Catholic Francis De Assisi High School, located at the far end of the Mandpeshwar Road. Their father had died from a heart attack when they were very young. Carmel could barely remember him but knew that he had worked on the railways.
