Dinner and a Surprise Epilogue Extended Epilogue Extended Epilogue Also by Lena Little PREVIEW Up until now, my career has been everything, and my reputation built one of the largest financial firms in the country. I’m Jack Jameson, the guy who checks off all the boxes. I’m powerful, and filthy rich, and people bend over backward to please me—at least they did until it all came crashing down around me. Charged with a crime that I didn’t commit, I have to place my future in the hands of an attorney who’s not only whip-smart but the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen. But she’s also very young, almost too young to take my case. In some ways she reminds me more of a little girl than an adult. I feel just as possessive and protective about my little lawyer angel outside the courtroom as she does me inside it. And even with my freedom on the line, there are only two things on my mind: proving my innocence and taking hers. Justice will be served. They’ve accused me of embezzlement, a white-collar crime, but they chain me up like a wild animal just to go meet my lawyer. I don’t know who the firm chose to represent me but they better be top of the firm. With what I pay them, spending even one night in jail is unacceptable. The guard opens the door to the interview room, and I step inside and hold my hands out to him. He gives me a stupid grin that makes me want to head-butt him into next Wednesday. “You have thirty minutes,” he says as he opens the cuffs. I want to rub my wrists because of how tight the little punk had them, but I won’t give him the satisfaction. The heavy metal door latches behind him when he leaves me to meet my new attorney. There’s a thud in my chest and I have to adjust my eyes. “Good morning, Mr. Jameson. I’m Jessica Mitchell. I’ll be the attorney representing you in this matter,” she tells me but I’m more interested in watching her lips form the words than what she’s saying. “Good morning,” I nod and pull out the flimsy metal folding chair across the table from her. “We shouldn’t have any difficulty setting bond this morning. The judge is fairly predictable in his rulings in these types of cases, and you don’t appear to be a flight risk on paper. You’re not a flight risk, are you? Is there a jet waiting to whisk you off to some tropical paradise?” She smiles, but my expression makes her second guess the levity and she shifts her weight from side to side. “Funny,” I force a grin to make her feel at ease. It’s not that her joke offended me. It’s that I was too busy trying to figure out how this stunning, young thing could possibly be anyone’s lawyer. Is she even old enough to have made it through law school? “The firm collected your financial records, residential history, and ties to the community already so I don’t believe I need anything from you before the hearing. Do you have any questions for me?” At a time when lucky breaks seem to be few and far between, spending the next thirty minutes examining this sweet young thing feels like winning the lottery. So I sit back, cross my arms on my chest, and begin. “You seem a little young to be a practicing attorney. It might be considered rude to ask a woman her age, but given the circumstances, I think it’s appropriate.” She breathes in deeply and says, “I get that all the time. You’re a very valued client and the firm wouldn’t have assigned me to your case if I wasn’t qualified.” “And you’re how old?” I press her. “I’m twenty-five, Mr. Jameson. I graduated law school at twenty-three and passed the BAR on my first try. In my year of practice, I’ve successfully represented three high-profile businessmen like you and have had a perfect track record. That’s zero convictions. Does that help to alleviate your concerns?” I do the math in my head and tell her, “Twenty-three? Two years of law school instead of three? That’s impressive.” “Actually, I did three years of law school. I just started college a year early. And there have been lawyers younger than me, you know. In nineteen-eighty-six, Stephen A. Baccus graduated law school at the age of nineteen.” “You’ve clearly done your homework on the subject. But, Stephen A. Baccus isn’t representing me. I don’t have to wonder if he’s going to blow off a pre-trial motion to go out clubbing with the girls or disappear during discovery because his boyfriend wants to go skiing for the weekend,” I retort. She leans across the table and my eyes drop to observe
