Seconds earlier, I had been admiring the lady sitting beside her husband and son a short distance from me and my boys. Her life must be so perfect, I had thought while watching her gentle way with her kid. The woman looked at ease with the boy, and the man by her side had a wide grin on as he watched both mother and son. “Come on, Noah. It’s our turn,” I said in a quiet voice to my three-year-old son when the nurse standing in front of me motioned for us to go into the consulting room next. Noah’s wide eyes held mine as I ruffled his black hair. Liam, my brother’s son, was with us too. He was a bit taller than Noah and resembled his mother, Sarah, more than my brother, James. He had her blonde hair and brown eyes, but whenever he smiled, I could see James right there on his face. Noah hesitated after I got on my feet, and I knew his phobia for needles had kicked in again. “I don’t want to go, Mommy,” he whined after I took my nephew’s hand and helped him get on his feet too. “Come on, Liam,” I said. Noah finally came with me begrudgingly, and the small pout on his lips made me smile. “We’re doing this for your own good, Noah.” I tried to console him like Mom used to do for me those many years ago. “Don’t worry you won’t get a shot, I promise.” “But I don’t want to,” he cried out again as the nurse pointed at which door to enter. “Thank you,” I whispered to the nurse before walking in. Noah was still grumbling when I took my seat and held him to my side, while Liam remained quiet by my other side. It was only my first week in Florida, and I was loving it already. I had always longed to return to Sanibel Island. I had been born here—I had grown up here and leaving at age eight hadn’t really changed my love for the shelly shores and long summers. Now that I was finally back, I intended to enjoy every moment of my time here. Perhaps make a life. Nothing felt more uplifting than doing that with the only family I had left, my brother. Liam had come down with a fever that the usual Tylenol hadn’t solved a few days back. When he passed it on to Noah, I began to suspect the flu and suggested a quick visit to the pediatrician. My brother and his wife had to work, but he had recommended Liam’s pediatrician. He said he was on-call at the children’s hospital and to ask to see him when I got there. Since I was watching Liam too for the day, and he still had his symptoms, it was better for both of them to see the doctor. Unfortunately, several parents were waiting with their kids to see this specialist. What was the doctor’s name again? Doctor Harper, I recalled. Seems like he’s the best around here. I thought to myself. Either way, it was our turn now, and I was anticipating his diagnosis. I hoped the boys didn’t have anything serious. Noah sneezed twice, and Liam coughed while we waited. Some minutes passed before the doctor finally walked into the consulting room. He was still at the doorway when I greeted him in a cheery tone. “Good morning, Doctor.” The doctor strode into the room while replying to my greeting and checking the chart in his hand. His voice sounded familiar the second he spoke. It reminded me of another deep breathy voice that had spiked my pulse and tormented my dreams for years. “Noah Ashley?” he asked, then finally looked up at us. Even before he raised his head to look at me fully, my pulse skipped a beat, and a sudden dizziness overcame me, making my heart go haywire. Oh no … My insides chilled when he finally looked at me, and I met his dark hawkish eyes. I had never forgotten them. Or that face. Heat flushed my skin and burned my cheeks as images of our one wild night flashed in my mind. It was vividly hot. Scalding. The feel of his fingers stroking my skin, his lips and teeth nibbling as he gave me pleasure. My own helpless moans when I straddled and rode him, letting go of all my inhibitions and … “Mrs. Ashley?” he called to get my attention, and I blinked back to reality, then cleared my throat. “I’ll need to do a brief physical exam of the boys,” he continued while holding my gaze. I noticed that he folded his arms and unfolded them constantly. It came off like he was uncomfortable, and I sensed he could remember me. My heart was pounding faster in my chest now, and it felt like sweat was forming on my forehead and skin. Why isn’t
