Chapter One BETH GAZED OUT AT THE scenery, taking in the breathtaking view of the surrounding forest. The tall, thick trees swayed gently in the breeze, casting long shadows across the ground. The stream bubbled nearby, and the distant hoot of an owl added a contrasting note to nature’s chorus. Grimm bounded out of the RV and immediately started sniffing around, his nose to the ground as he explored the new surroundings. He trotted over to the stream, lapping up water with his tongue. Beth watched him for a moment, a smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. It was the little moments like this that made her appreciate her road trip with Grimm. She took a deep breath of the crisp air, feeling a sense of calm wash over her. She loved being out in nature, away from the chaos of the city and the stresses of work. She and Grimm had a routine they followed when they set up camp, and she began to set up their home away from home. She pulled out their camping chairs and table and lit a lantern for light as the sun continued to set. Before it got dark, she started a small fire. She didn’t feel like cooking in the confines of the small Class C, so she’d indulge in an unhealthy meal of hot dogs and marshmallows. “Do you want a hot dog?” Grimm looked at her with a head tilt and gave a low whine. “I’ll take that as a yes.” She entered the RV a moment later, overwhelmed with the memory of the day she and Joel picked it out. He’d been on leave from his latest deployment and had decided to retire. They’d planned to take an entire summer to travel, so they’d bought this RV after exploring their options. Her gaze went to the bedroom at the back as she opened the fridge. They’d christened it well the first night of their first short trip. She ached to feel his arms around her and had to blink back tears. Meeting her hazel-eyed gaze in the chrome surface of the microwave above the stove, she pushed back her frizzy brown hair. “They wouldn’t know me at work, baby,” she said to Joel’s picture, which she’d mounted on the wall. At work, she kept a short pixie cut to control her natural curls, but she’d let it grow during the last two months and hadn’t bothered with much maintenance. Grimm woofed at her and licked his lips, reminding her she had dinner to make. She reached down and ruffled the fur on his head. “Okay. I’m right behind you.” He spun and leapt from the RV, not bothering with the steps, as she followed behind. Once dinner was finished, they relaxed near the fire. Grimm laid by her feet, his nose twitching as he took in the scents of the surrounding forest. Beth pulled out her journal and started jotting down some notes about their trip so far, trying to get into the mindset of someone on vacation. But the truth was, she was restless. Ever since Joel died, she had felt aimless, like she was wandering without purpose. She missed the adrenaline rush of solving cases and the camaraderie of her fellow detectives. She missed Joel most of all—the sound of his voice, his laughter, and his touch. As she sat by the fire, lost in thought, her phone rang, jolting her out of her reverie. She reached for it, noticing the caller ID was from the department. She hesitated for a moment, unsure if she was ready to dive back into work so soon after Joel’s death, but ultimately answered the call. “Danville,” she said, trying to keep her voice steady. “Beth, it’s Cassia. I hate to do this to you, but we have a missing child case in Olympia. The parents are frantic, and the local police could use some extra help. Are you up for it?” Beth took a deep breath, feeling a sense of purpose stir within her. She looked over at Grimm, who was staring up at her with his big brown eyes, as if he knew what
