My choices do… I thought choosing to inherit my family’s powers would be enough to make my life perfect. Turns out they might be more trouble than I anticipated. With my aunt still recovering and no real mentor in sight, it’s up to me to figure things out. If only my newfound magic could also get me out of the real-life problems that have caught up to me. If I don’t get control of things fast, who knows what chaos will explode out of me. Bombspell is Book 2 in the Charmed Midlife series and a slow-burn romantic paranormal women’s fiction with a woman who’s rediscovering her sass and learning how to kick a little ass. Chapter One If I’d known inheriting magic would one day result in me standing barefoot in the middle of a stream, afraid that my toes would freeze and fall off, I probably would have been only eighty percent on the side of accepting it. When a shift in my stance caused a sharp stone to dig into my right heel, that number dropped below fifty. “Ow! Tell me again how risking frostbite on my limbs has anything to do with my training?” I lifted my leg to check and make sure blood wasn’t pouring out of my foot. Aunt Tilda drew in a long sip from her bone china teacup atop her cushy seat on a very dry tree trunk. “I told you magic isn’t performed in a vacuum. You have to learn how to draw on it in any situation. It’s important that you can access it even when you’re heavily distracted. Or slightly inconvenienced.” I opened my mouth to argue with her, but why bother? Out of the two of us, she had the greater experience. And that point always put me on the losing side of any protests. Grumbling under my breath and wanting to get through today’s ridiculous exercise as fast as possible so I could warm up my toes, I grit my teeth, drew in a deep breath, and got on with my so-called training. Calling on the power of earth, I forced a small stone out of the water and added some air magic to send it skipping on top of the surface a couple of times. “Not bad. But those elements are easy to access from where you’re standing.” “If I were inspired by my current environment, I could create an ice fortress. Complete with a moat filled with crocodiles.” I swallowed the intent to throw her in such a place, allowing that sentiment to warm me a little. My aunt raised an eyebrow as if she heard my unspoken thought but continued to be unaffected by my annoyance. After another long sip, she placed her teacup down on its saucer with a clatter. “Finish demonstrating your mastery of all the elements and you can take a break.” A break. Not finished for the day. But as I wiggled my toes to push some blood into them, I realized what happened after this didn’t matter as much as finishing the task. I ticked through the elements already used. Earth. Air. That left water, which shouldn’t be a problem considering where I stood. And one more. My aunt’s intentions dawned on me a little too late. Tilda cackled. “I swear, I can see an actual lightbulb hovering above your head, finally clicking on.” I aimed a middle finger in her direction and concentrated. If the old witch wanted me to prove myself, then I needed to up my game. With renewed determination, I shook out my hands and steadied my stance, digging my toes into the mucky mud to gain the strongest foundation. After drawing a long breath in and letting it out, I got to work. A dead branch lay across the stream a few yards away, most of it rotting under the water. With the same skills from before, I concentrated and lifted it into the air. Water, mud, and weeds dripped from its surface and splashed back into the stream. Power pulsed through one hand as I used it to keep the branch steady. I drew my other hand back and flourished my fingers in the air. A cool breeze stirred around me and blew my hair around my face, but in my excitement, it was easy to ignore the distraction. Harnessing the wild element, I locked in my intent and directed it to increase the breeze into a stronger wind. “Don’t go conjuring up a tornado to rip this place apart.” My aunt’s voice rose above my machinations.
